I don't know about the 6xx but many people don't consider the HD660S an upgrade over the HD650.

This. 6xx is currently 240, I'd spend the extra 60 for these personally. I haven't purchased headphones in quite a while, but when I was it was between these and Beyerdynamic dt1990 pros. I went with the Beyerdynamis somewhere between 450-500, but if these would've been $300 I probably would've purchased these.

Drop 6xx are equivalent to the hd650

6xx is essentially identical to the 650. So that would mean these fall similar to the 6xx as well based on what you're saying. That's news to me, but I'd believe it. I don't think these are very different from the 650/6xx, but I was still under the impression there's some noticable improvement.

On Amazon by Amazon it's $338.
Amazon via third party WORLD WIDE STEREO is $300. This is a good retailer, but I've been finding that returns aren't free lately from Amazon 3rd party sellers. Even though it's not stated, I've been paying return shipping and, in one case, a large restocking fee. Just FYI.

The Macy's $300 is directly from Sennheiser. I'd rather go that route.

The HD 6xx was $230 refurbished from Senn Outlet a while back. I might just wait for that to come around again.
Edit: Meant 650S above, not 6xx.
