The 4K versions are such a massive upgrade, I couldn't imagine watching them any other way now. To call the 4K ones a night & day difference is an understatement. The HDR on them is amazing. If you have a 4K HDR TV, this is a waste of money.

Does the 4k edit make Gollum CGI look dated?

He seemed totally natural in the original dvd version but it seems more apparent he is CGI when I watch the bluray. I have held off on picking up 4k for fear that it will accentuate this even more.

I would guess that these ones do. It says they are remastered. I'm betting these are made from the 2020 4k discs' source material.

Not necessarily. I know the T2: Judgment Day 4K wiped a lot of the detail through DNR, making the Blu-ray the best way to watch it.

From what I understand the biggest reason to upgrade to the 4K version of the LOTR trilogy is the Atmos mix.

The Terminator 2 4k (initial) release date was in 2017. That was released long after the blu-rays (which many do consider the definitive version due excessive DNR in the 4k release).

The specific version of LotR in this thread is from 2021 and are advertised as remastered, so I don't believe it's a simple rerelease of the 2011 blu-rays. It stands to reason that these versions are just 1080p versions of the master used to create the 4k discs, as I can't see them putting in more work beyond what they already did for the 4k discs.

Anyways, I like the 4k versions of LotR a lot. For me personally, (excessive) DNR typically only bothers when it's done on movies from the 80s or earlier.

Just received mine. The picture quality is a huge improvement over my prior DVD version (and even looks better to me than my 4K streaming version). The sound quality of the Dolby Atmos sound track is quite good as well. The box says it has DTS Master as well, although for some reason my receiver does not give me that as an option. The choices are only Dolby True HD, Dolby Atmos, Dolby True HD + Neural X, and Multi Track Audio………and the movie setup menu itself, does not really have an audio choice….just languages. Well worth the $15, IMO. And given the lack of a 4K player…..the best my Oppo BDP-103 can play. (and given that it is about 1/3 the current price of the remastered trilogy extended versions, not a bad deal.). I can always watch the extended versions on DVD if I choose, or the streaming version.

If you had read the books, you'd know that yes indeed, a large part of this story is people walking and talking lol. Even the extended edition is a fraction of the epic that is LOTR.

I'm a big LOTR fan and I've always preferred the extended editions, but recently I rewatched the theatrical editions for the first time in years and honestly I think they're better movies. The extended editions offer more for fans and are certainly enjoyable, but the pacing is better in the theatrical editions. Many of the added scenes slow things down without adding much to the story, or in the case of Aaragorn rallying the Army of the Dead, it kind of ruins the tension at Minas Tirith.

Obviously the extended editions are still great for fans, and they add some depth and fun scenes, but it's mostly unnecessary from a film standpoint and in many cases simply throws off the pacing. The one scene that I absolutely think shouldn't have been cut from the theatrical release is the death of Saruman. Leaving that plot hole open seems like an odd choice. Would be great if there were a followup short film for the Scouring of the Shire, but it would require a big budget and never would work in reality.
