You can keep down voting me if you want. But the fact is I listened to all these 8GB fan boys when I bought the m1 mini when it first came out. It crashed running Safari tabs. I had to upgrade to the 16GB model and it's been perfect ever since. Sure though, listen to these basement clowns who haven't had both and can reference a YouTube video or whatever and have no actual experience with the product. Fair warning!

I have a M1 Mac Mini with 16GB Ram, I'm a photographer and I've been running out of system Memory fairly often recently due to working between several applications. I'll have Adobe Bridge open with a session open, will open the a few raw files in Photoshop. I might be doing a head swap so there's 3 files open, in Photoshop, then I want to do a few face edits in Portrait Pro Studio Max, so I open that and I get an error that I've run out of application memory (RAM) oh and I have FIrefox open with 56 tabs open as well. So I usually either close Bridge until I'm done working in Portrait Pro, and then after I've saved the file I'll close Portrait Pro and re-open Bridge, and that works, but it's mostly just due to my messy multitasking workflow running multiple RAM intensive programs while shooting RAW files with a 50MP sensor.

So, as for me, I just ordered a Mac Mini M2 pro with the RAM upgraded to 32GB.

So if you run programs like I do, and you have Illustrator, InDesign, and Premiere or Final Cut Pro all running simultaneously with chrome or firefox and perhaps a music streaming service open too, then you might want to go for the 32GB option. If however, you work in a only 2 or maybe 3 programs simultaneously you should be fine, the most bang for your buck is gonna be the M2 with the 16GB RAM option, and just close the extra programs you're not working if you should ever run out of RAM. The Video programs can be kind of RAM heavy so if you or your church has the budget I'd go with the M2 pro with the 32GB of RAM, but you could probably do what you want to with the M2 with 16GB so long as you only work in Premiere and and After Effects and don't have Photoshop and InDesign also running, because I think each of those programs requires about 4GB of RAM when you have a project open in them.

Okay so I just checked my activity monitory and with Photoshop minimized and running in the background with no open projects it's using 1.35GB of RAM. I opened one 13MB (yes megabyte) JPEG file and the RAM use for Photoshop jumped to 4.24GB. I've closed that 13MB file and Photoshop is still using 4.14GB of RAM. I also have a session open in Bridge, and just looking through the photos in the session it's using up 3.45GB of RAM. Now I like to open a Raw image in Camera Raw before opening it in Photoshop. So if I open up one of my RAW files in Camera RAW (which is still a subprogram of Bridge) Bridge's RAM jumps to 6GB, if I pull a few sliders and do a single subject selection Adobe Bridge then takes up 8.94GB of RAM So you see where I can quickly run out of RAM.

My guess is you'll want the 32GB option, but you could make do with 16GB if you have to.

I hope this long winded comment can help you (and other creatives) in your decision making process. 😊
Interesting - I would always feel better with more RAM. I think I'm going to hold out for the Mac Studio later in the year hoping that it will get the M2 chip as well. Thank you for your help!

Unless you like to open a lot of Safari tabs. I had to swap my 8GB m1 mini for a 16GB because it kept locking up the whole computer when I was doing heavy browsing. All I had running was Safari or Chrome. But feel free to listen to all the children who've never used an 8GB mini. If you can swing it, I'd highly recommend the 16GB. Now if it's for someone older who just needs a few tabs and not much else open it is fine.
Got it. Thanks. How many tabs do you consider a lot? I rarely have over 5 tabs or windows open unless it's during a fantasy baseball or fantasy football draft.

My wife usually has 50 going at one time, but she won't be using this computer, and that's what I consider to be a lot…to overkill.

I'm posting this from an 8GB M1 Mac mini. Granted, it's not my main rig because gaming. I have been building my own DOS/Windows machines for 30 years. But I can use the mini for work (Office + Safari + Firefox + Zoom typically) just fine. I have encoded 4K60 video on it and it was surprisingly fast.

I, personally, would get an M2 Pro mini at a minimum, which comes with 16GB, if it were to be my main rig. But I can tell you from how I see most people using their computers, if you just want a computer to do computer things, the base model is fine. Wait until you run out of storage and then just get a cheap USB-C expansion.

In fact, I would say if someone has $500 to spend on a computer to do things with, this mini deal will serve them better than basically any prebuilt PC you can get at the moment.

As I have posted previously and with experience with both 8gb and 16gb versions of past m1 devices, 8gb was never enough for me and 16gb was perfectly fine. Even then though I always almost max out on the memory use, it has never slowed down. With 8gb, it would lag a lot.

These are not upgradable so if u don't want to listen to people with actual experience with 8gb devices then by all means, go buy it. If it ends up working for u, then that's great! Do share what u use it for so those with similar usage would benefit from your experience. Just don't whine about it when it doesn't.

Oh and of course, I opted for the 16gb version. Trading in my useless 2017 Macbook Pro 13 that was collecting dust at home which was valued at 180 so the cost of the 8gb ram upgrade. How sad... lol

ALSO, if browser tabs are your concern then just use autotab discard or similar addons/extensions. It helps a lot with the memory usage. They basically "sleep" your tabs that you haven't touched in a while and you can whitelist those you don't want to be frozen.

It would be relevant to know what kind of tasks that you've been performing that led to maxing out 8GB and lagging. That way others can judge if their use case is similar to yours and whether 16GB would suit them better. Thanks.

It's interesting spme folks say 8gb is enough some saying 16gb is min..

If one is purely only doing office work like word excel and browsing many many tabs in Chrome.

But no video editing , rendering etc so do we still need 16gb?

180$ inst a lot but .

If M5 mini comes in few years at 500 600$ base rather save the $200.

I don't think this future proofing makes any sense.

When the next gen comes everyone will have the itch and ask if we should upgrade..that is always the case. And in some cases the upgrade may have enhancements.

Trying to figure out a "cashback" deal…. Discover and Chase credit cards both offer 5% back at grocery stores right now… Could you buy an Apple gift card at the grocery store, get 5% back, and use it to buy the Mac mini? Not sure if gift cards get the 5% back…
No problem. I use Discover to buy a $500 Target gift card every year and get the full cash back bonus for using Apple Pay or whatever the deal is that quarter. Essentially, you can use a CC to buy a GC, but you can rarely use a GC to buy another GC. I doubt any grocery stores will have Apple gift cards for an additional discount, but sometimes that happened too.

My typical usage: Screenshots [imgur.com]

As you can see in the last screenshot, even if most of my Edge tabs are frozen/put to sleep, it still uses 4gb of ram and that's just ONE browser/app. That's HALF of the 8gb base.

If all you do is browse the web then u don't even need an Apple device. Far cheaper devices out there such as chromebooks that work well w/ even 4gb of ram.

M2 Pro version of the Mac mini now supports up to 4K240 through the HDMI port. A welcome but overdue upgrade.
This thread isn't about the $1299 ($1199 with EDU discount) Pro version though.

You can check how much ram your system is currently using for your browser and other apps. Just note that it doesn't appear Apple will increase the base ram to 16gb anytime soon, probably not even when the M5 is out. So while the soc will get more powerful and efficient, 8gb of ram is 8gb of ram. Apple may optimize their OS and apps for ram but that doesn't mean the apps you use are as optimized or at all. If you're currently using a system with 8gb of ram especially if it's an Intel based system and it's perfectly fine to you then 8gb will continue to serve you well.

Yes I do use a lot of chrome tabs and youtube etc.

But my current laptop is a dell i7 10th generation with 32gb be ram added later.

And a intel MBP 2019 i7 16gb ram.

But all these folks saying unified memory is not same as normal memory confuse me.
