Yes, these are cheap, but they're also 3-4 years old. Figure batteries may not be in top condition. And CPUs are several generations old; fine for standard business work but don't expect these to be the best for gaming or video creation/editing.

Likely these are off-lease business laptops. Not TC'ing, just know what you're getting into.

How on earth is an $800 Macbook a relevant alternative to a $300 refurbished Windows laptop?

I also don't understand the 'outdated' concept. An 8th gen i7 will do literally any task that 99.9999999% of computer users do today and for the next 5 years. And 32GB of RAM is a ridiculous amount for even a brand-new laptop. What are people doing with their computers that the above isn't enough? My only concern with this refurbished machine would be battery life.

That's some sound logic right there. True words of wisdom.

Instead of buying a 2 year old used car for $12k you should instead buy a $36k new car because it's better.

Grabbed a 7300 for $268 to replace my end of life Win7 thinkpad t420, which I bought used 7 years ago. Hoping to get as much life out of this one Smilie
Install Linux Mint or some other distro to breathe life into your old machine. You will get regular security updates too.

I was pointing out that your calling it a "beast of a PC" is probably an overstatement.

I'm not too familiar with Dell Latitudes. What is the difference between 5000 series vs 7000 series?

Also within the series (7400 vs 7490)?

The 8gb models usually have an open slot?
Also bumping this. Some people seem to not like certain 7000 series models? I'm still unclear.

I kind of want a 2-in-1 to draw on. These are more than powerful enough for Photoshop and Clip Studio. Since the RAM in those is not upgradable, have to wait to see if a 16 GB pops up. I may just settle for a "regular" laptop though. Also way too many of these with low res screens. 4K on a 13.3" screen would be ridiculous, but x768 is terrible even for one that small.

Got a Dell 5300 2 in 1 touch 8 gen i7 with 16 gb ram two weeks ago. I am very pleased with the unit, I ran the battery report and had about 78% life, I contacted Dell and gave me a 35 usd refund.
Thx man, for the partial refund would you mind sharing:
-whether you called or emailed them
-were they chill about it, or did you have to complain a lot?

Most everyday person is fine with 8th gen. Snob.
Lol the same everyday person that buys a PC with a 5+ year old chipset then turns around and complains about Windows 10/11 being slow at opening apps, tabs, documents, pics, etc (using processing threads and speed vs actual ram usage)...that "everyday person" that doesn't have the proper information to buy a PC with the power of the proper chipset to drive Windows 10/11? Really?... This person isn't a snob but simply being more knowledgeable than the average person and pointing out that you're basically buying a PC with a chipset that's going to be valued as a paper weight in about 18 months..

Doing computers repair. So, about 70% - Dell. HP-10%, Lenovo -10%.. all another brands - 10%. Poor quality, very bad charging system and hinges. That your choice.. but I will never buy Dell to myself..

Why is it hard to buy a 8th Gen?
Also, maybe just dont spill or drop your cheap or expensive electronics??
It's like windows 8 era hehe. They at 13 now which im sure is ultra faster for the money. I find often the older stuff has limited driver updates and all that too.

I'm working on the dropping thing. I got me a sleeve for my other new laptop. I just don't like having one this good on me is all as yeah Im a clutz. I destroyed the last vevo book of mine because i put it in my bookbag and my water bottle that had maybe 2 onces left leaked out on the laptop hehe.

8th gen cores are great. They're the first chips where the low power U chips started having 4 cores. My daughter uses my old surface pro 4 with 6th gen (sky lake) and while it's good enough for what kids need, the U chips then were 2 core and it shows in multi tasking.

Are we getting shilled negs in addition to the shilled frontpages now?

Every person I know who bought an HP in the last 5 years, at least one thing broke. Often the battery. I'm not too thrilled looking at off-lease items but at least I know any major faults are already repaired and it will be a stable system.

Also, Windows 10 should run smoothly on i3 + 8gb from at least 2015, should probably run decently on an i3 + 8gb from 2012 or so as long as it's an SSD or even a 7200 RPM HD (5600 RPM shouldn't even exist). If an 8th gen i5 is lagging just from basic Windows operations someone has clicked enough male enhancement ads that there's more viruses than Windows in RAM. An i3 + 16GB of RAM or higher should have no problem running Windows + Office + Photoshop + Audacity + a lot of games at moderate framerates + 500 tabs in Chrome (Firefox seems to be getting so bad lately that an i9 with 64GB isn't enough anymore).

my Dell i5 6th gen is more than fast enuf, we keep it virus free with windows defender and malwarebytes, but may move to bit defender. ram and SSD are cheap and key to these older machines. protect a laptop with a case and it will have a happy life.

It is sad how poor Firefox performance has become over the past year. On my desktop, even Edge is significantly better and seeks to have better compatibility. I frequently find web sites that Firefox just will not open but other browsers have no issues with. Used to love Firefox years ago, just garbage now. And 8th gen intels are still plenty good enough for basic needs and lighter games like Hearthstone.

Thanks! I just received a 7490 for $295 shipped.

It has 32 gigs of ram, infrared hello unlock, touch screen, usbc charging, backlit keyboard, a 256 nvme ssd and looks like it's never been touched.

A killer deal for a kick around laptop that we can use around the house. Thanks!!

I bought one of these 2 weeks ago in on the last sale. A few points.

I bought a grade A refurb Latitude 7490 touch unit and was not impressed with the "refurbishment". Someone might have run a rag over it but that was about it. It was disappointing as the Dell Latitude 5300 refurb I got several months ago was perfect. Also, weirdly, the Intel i7 sticker was very misaligned so I removed it. There was more dust, debris, human hairs, and skin flakes embedded under the keys than I have ever seen. Every key was like a clown car of human hair. I'd think I had gotten them all out from under the keys then another would pop-up. It was disgusting. I called to rerun it but they have me a moderate discount for the hassle so I kept it and finished cleaning it. I used the little brush for cleaning my electric razor to get underneath the keys.

The unit works fine and is upgradeable to Win 11 after I upgraded the RAM memory to 16 gigs. The battery worked but was old and did not hold a charge for all that long so I bought a new one for $32 from Amazon. As a pleasant surprise, the back was easily removable to access the components so the battery swap and RAM upgrade was a smooth process. It's plenty speedy for almost any browsing and office use. General usability and build quality are much better than a cheapo new $250 - $300 unit with a cheap screen, creaky chassis, and mushy keyboard.

The 5300 is IMO one of the best 13.3in laptop and 2in1 available. Both the laptop AND the 2in1 have TWO sodimm slots , unlike the 7390 laptops which only have one sodimm slot and 7390 2in1 which has zero sodimm slots. Those of you that are lucky enough to nail a 5300 should consider yourself lucky because they almost never has the 5300 on sale because it is really one of the best!

The 7490 is pretty good for 14in laptop since it does have two sodimm slots. But for the ultimate in small size of 13.3in , the 5300 is really the best. The only negative is that the 5300 2in1 gives up one usb-c TB port so it only has one usb-c TB port instead of two in the 7390 2in1, but that two sodimm slots more than make up for having only one usb-c port!

Also, the MB for the 5300 laptop and 2in1 are nearly identical being different in only the laptop includes the RJ45 port and the 2in1 has no RJ45 port. But because the 5300 are nearly identical with virtually the same layout, they were able to use the same EXACT battery in both the 5300 laptops and 2in1. Not so with the 7390 laptops and 2in1 which has different MB layout preventing the use of the same battery
