Yes, these are cheap, but they're also 3-4 years old. Figure batteries may not be in top condition. And CPUs are several generations old; fine for standard business work but don't expect these to be the best for gaming or video creation/editing.

Likely these are off-lease business laptops. Not TC'ing, just know what you're getting into.

How on earth is an $800 Macbook a relevant alternative to a $300 refurbished Windows laptop?

I also don't understand the 'outdated' concept. An 8th gen i7 will do literally any task that 99.9999999% of computer users do today and for the next 5 years. And 32GB of RAM is a ridiculous amount for even a brand-new laptop. What are people doing with their computers that the above isn't enough? My only concern with this refurbished machine would be battery life.

That's some sound logic right there. True words of wisdom.

Instead of buying a 2 year old used car for $12k you should instead buy a $36k new car because it's better.

I have a refurbished Latitude, bought in early 2016, that has lasted almost 7 years (running Windows 8 Pro until a few weeks ago) ... although it's always been relatively slow and never multitasked well. I did upgrade to a different SATA HD in 2018 as I thought the slowness might be due to HD issues. The i3 chip was 5th gen (i3-5010U, CPU @ 2.10GHz) and probably not one of the better ones.

I just upgraded to one stick of 8 GB RAM (after upgrading to Windows 10 in late Dec) to see if that would improve speed with Windows 10 - it did slightly, but still fairly slow (Chrome and Edge both use 50% of memory even with just a tab or 2 open). Was thinking of adding another 8GB, but now with the battery issues, won't do it.

I paid around $300 for this refurbished Latitude in 2016 (with some extra coupon discount), so I didn't buy the absolute cheapest refurbished Latitude out there. In some ways I know I'm lucky it's lasted this long ... but would like to get a few more years out of it. Smilie

So refurbished can be ok ... although it can also be hit or miss, as others have mentioned. And Dell standards can change over time.

Whether to buy refurbished depends in part on what your time is worth to you. And whether to buy an older generation chip depends how important multitasking is to you. An 8th gen chip might barely be ok now for minimal multitasking, but in a few years, might not be ok at all. Multitasking very important to me, but I had relegated this computer to one I only used for very limited purposes, so could live with its inability to multitask. It seems browsers these days are major memory hogs, and I think that's part of the problem I had with the computer ... before the very slow battery charge issue which just developed recently. (I've tried reconfiguring Chrome (following advice on various web pages) to reduce the memory demands, but it really hasn't had any effect.)

For those who are less technically savvy (like me): (assuming you have your taskbar set up as I do, in Windows 10) Right click on the Windows Icon in bottom left corner of screen (in taskbar); Open WindowsPowerShell[Admin] to run the terminal command.

There's probably some keyboard command to open the Admin version of WindowsPowerShell, but someone else will have to add that.

I'm trying to figure out now why it recently (about 14 days after updating to Windows 10 at end of Dec, from Windows 8.1 Pro) started charging the battery very very slowly - it takes hours to add a couple percent, and seems to max out in the low 70% of charge.

The battery report didn't help me, but it's easy to do, and I hadn't known about this. says design capacity is 38760 mWh, and full charge capacity is 28217 mWh ... so while there's been some loss, there's still theoretically capacity left.

If I knew for sure a new battery would fix the problem, I'd buy one (to get another couple years hopefully), but am hesitant, since others have said they tried this approach with no improvement.

I'm thinking the problem could in part be something to do with software or OS or something like that, but I'm at a loss as to how to fix it.

I've done everything suggested on various web pages to figure out why the charging issues.
If anyone has another suggestion, let me know.
  • I have 2 Dell adapters, and they both charge another Dell Latitude just fine. I also removed the battery, started computer with power adapter, and that worked just fine. So unless there's some issue specific to this computer interacting with both of my power adapters, I don't think the adapter is the issue.
  • BIOS and all drivers up-to-date.
  • Dell Hardware Diagnostics (F12 at startup says the adapter isn't attached when it is. But BIOS says battery health is fine.
  • Windows troubleshooter finds no problems.
  • I've uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft ACPI battery manager.
  • Tried plugging computer directly into wall (rather than a power strip with a surge protector).
  • Tried shutting down, opening up back, uninstalling, then reinstalling the computer.
  • Just did a Repair Install (from an .iso file on laptop) of Windows 10, as some mention battery issues can crop up after a Windows upgrade, sometimes due to a faulty install.

Don't think it's the DC input since computer charges - albeit very slowly. (If I'm wrong here, please let me know, as replacing the DC input is the cheapest option to try to fix this.)
If I knew for sure replacing the battery would fix

Did everything suggested on these (and other) pages)

To add to it. The Latitude 7000 series regardless of screen size have been Dell's business grade work horses for well over a decade. To claim they aren't great for gaming given the target user for these is asinine.
What's the real life difference between the i5 and the i7 chip? I thought the i7 chip just added features enterprises might want (to administer remotely a fleet of computers for employees), but the i5 chip was essentially the same specs (minus the enterprise features), and the i5 chip would be fine for home users.

Edit: This tells you a bit: https://www.pcmag.com/news/which-...e-i5-vs-i7 The answer is: Whether there's much of a difference depends ....

Thanks! I just received a 7490 for $295 shipped.

It has 32 gigs of ram, infrared hello unlock, touch screen, usbc charging, backlit keyboard, a 256 nvme ssd and looks like it's never been touched.

A killer deal for a kick around laptop that we can use around the house. Thanks!!

Damn, guess I should have waited. I got a 7490 but it has a traditional power brick charger and it's a a SATA 256gb SSD

edit: apparently all the 7490's can be charged with USB-C

In an attempt to get you an answer, I went to this page:
https://fossbytes.com/powercfg-ch...using-cmd/

It doesn't really answer your question, but it does give you yet another command to look into power issues. (powercfg /energy ... note that at link above, they omitted the space before the forward slash ... you need to add a space)

I'd suggest using google to find your answer. At the very least, the command allows you to determine whether a newly shipped computer from Dell is at least charging to 80% of original capacity. If it's not, Dell should give you a replacement.

Links for Dell Refurbished are worse than useless because if the item goes out of stock it redirects to something else and then people downvote unable to replicate, or worse, buy it without looking and then get mad they got something totally different.

When someone makes one of these threads they should link to a search and not to a direct product. Just click on Laptops, then on the left go down and change it to 32 GB. Most of the time you will not even see it as a checkbox option, if it only shows 8 and 16 then the item is sold out. You have to sit there all day and refresh to catch them when they show up.

you are better off just getting the 8GB ram version and upgrade it yourself with two 16gb sticks. ram is very cheap nowaday.

This was my experience. 7490, non-touch with 8 GB Ram, 256 GB Micron SSD. Refurbished by FedEx. Grade A. SSD had around 20TB read/write cycles. This is from the previous deal.

I upgraded RAM to 16GB and NVME 500GB drive. Also ran air through processor fan to remove some debris. Removed Intel controller software, via BIOS, it was in RAID for some reason, and used AHCI instead. Checked battery date code and ran all the checks listed for health report. Updated all drivers and firmware. Running really well so far.

Day 7 or so. Keeping an eye on temperatures. As others have said it's a bit of a lottery but so far I am happy with my purchase pending something I have not spotted such as system stability.

Also, the MB for the 5300 laptop and 2in1 are nearly identical being different in only the laptop includes the RJ45 port and the 2in1 has no RJ45 port. But because the 5300 are nearly identical with virtually the same layout, they were able to use the same EXACT battery in both the 5300 laptops and 2in1. Not so with the 7390 laptops and 2in1 which has different MB layout preventing the use of the same battery
Does the 5300 have an nvme slot? I see some come up with HDDs now and then. Definitely don't want a spinny drive

Why isn't this dead?

Edit:
I was on Outlet my mistake. What confused me was the coupon kept saying no longer available.

Yes it has an m2 2280 primary slot which can take either sata or nvme ssd.

It also has an additional M.2 3042 Key-B slot for the WWAN which can take an MSATA ssd. Make sure you get the right msata ssd for this slot as this is NOT a regular m2 sata slot!

there is no 2.5in slot so you will never get a spinny drive inside a 5300 laptop. It's just not possible!

Huh, there was an i7 which said it had a 1TB HDD. Maybe it was an SSD. Gone now. It was grade B, which I'm reluctant to buy anyway.

how much did you see it went for?

5300 really doesn't have any 2.5in slot! AFAIK, there is no spinny m2 HDD.
