First time using Savebetter, they are essentially a broker that works with various banks. Application and funding of this CD was amazingly simple, took less than 5 minutes.

How about for regular CDs, meaning can we specify the maturity settings online anytime before maturity?

Is this just for people who have a bunch of cash sitting around? With inflation at 7%, you're losing 2% per year on any cash in this cd, and you're locked in for over 2 years.

What is the incentive here? A slower loss of money?

But if you put your money in your mattress (or do nothing) you are losing 7% of your money each year. So a 4% account saves you 3%. Unless you have a lucrative investment...

I had a small real estate investment that I made about 10% on by buying and selling last year so I matched inflation. I doubt inflation will be another 10% this year. I am pretty sure it will not be 10% this year and next year. So while I do not have a bunch of cash sitting around, to answer your question yes.

I am not very educated on this. I heard borrowers can call the CD due and take it back without paying interest. Probably pretty rare but I want my money somewhere where no one can mess with it.

No, it's 5% APY and this is over 27 months. You would get $1,160 in interest if you kept it over the 27 month period without withdrawing early.

Brokered CDs are available thru brokerage firms, e.g. Schwab, Fidelity, & Vanguard. You don't have to use Savebetter.

You should also look at I bonds that currently have a higher interest rate 6.89%. Moreover, the interest from CDs is taxable by the Federal & local governments, while the interest from I bonds is only taxable by the Federal gov't. Be sure to read the ins and outs of I bonds as you are locked-in for a year, and there is an early redemption premium.

There is a long stand I bond thread here https://slickdeals.net/f/15758386-us-treasury-series-i-savings-bonds-inflation-rate-earnings-may-oct...

I do have some I bonds which are nice but the 6.89% will be updated in a few months and with inflation getting better will probably drop. Historically the rate has been very low. Still a nice hedge against inflation.

Why don't you do a little self research instead of asking random people on the internet to educate you on personal finance. You'd be a lot better served, and more knowledgeable.

Thank you for sharing that! How about for regular CDs as per their FAQs it appears one can change the maturity settings to close on maturity anytime before maturity...is that understanding correct?

Yes, that has been my experience as well.

You can buy more than $10,000 per year by gifting. A nice video on how to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2...J4M&t=709s

If you have children, you can gift them an I bond. They just need a SSN & a Treasury account. Similarly, you can gift your wife.

Remember that the 6.89% rate is composed of a fixed rate and a variable rate. The variable part of the I bond interest rate will likely fall come May, but the fixed rate, 0.4%, is permanently part of the bond. So, if the variable falls to 3%, the I bond rate would be roughly 3.4%.

The new rate starts in May. But, if you wait until the middle of April when the CPI is reported, the variable part will be determined for the next 6 months. Basically, you have advanced notice of the interest rate before it is announced. If you buy in the later part of April, you will received 6.89% for 1st 6 months and you will pretty much know what the interest rate will be 2nd 6 months.

I don't see No penalty CD's offer through Salliemae's home website. The rates for the regular CDs are also different. I wonder how Savebetter get these rates let alone No penalty CDs.
