After a long, hard think on this question, I've come to the conclusion that people ask because they don't know. Mystery solved.

I love the looks of this one. I guess it's as close as I would ever get to a custom shop relic at a quarter of custom shop prices.

Here a video of Greg Koch playing one:

None of the Fender Artist / Signature models indicate where they were built.

Beck, Clapton, Johnson are MIA and come with cases. The Robert Cray, Richie Blackmore are MIM with gig bags The Kotzen Telecaster MIJ come with no case or bag.

Wow...$1000 for a non American-made Fender to be considered any kind of deal? Good luck to all who buy this.

When I follow the link it shows the discounted price but when I'm browse to it from adorama it shows 1549. Is there a certain trick to get the discount price shown? I see other close out deals but no price changes.

I'm about to pull the trigger on SE Silver Sky. Is this a better choice for a beginner?

Not the only MIM artist Fender over $1000 - there are a few I can think off right off the top of my head. Seems to be where the prices are going these days for a name on their guitars.

Best choice for a beginner is get to a guitar store and play a bunch of different guitars. Having a guitar you like the looks of will inspire you to play more, but if you don't like how it FEELS, you won't really be happy with it.

It usually says on the back of the headstock where it was made. This one says "Made in Mexico".

Simply because it's made in America? No. I have current Mexican, American, Chinese, and Indonesian Fender/Squiers and the quality is not vastly different. There really is diminishing returns in quality on guitars. An American performer (cheapest current American) isn't really $1,000 better quality than a squier classic vibe now a days. My player plus strat had better fretwork than the twice as expensive American acoustasonic. Get a guitar with the look and features you want. Country of manufacture is becoming less and less a factor every day.
And if it's your first, GO TO A STORE. You can pick one you like the looks of online, but you really need to hold it to see if it fits your hands and you like the feel. There are as many different styles/shapes of necks as there are guitars. Even within the same model they can vary do to hand finishing of many of them.

Neither is "better" for a beginner. Both are quality guitars. The PRS might be more acoustically versatile due to pickup configuration, but that's purely a style choice. Get the one you like the look and sound of best. And if you can somehow hold them first, the one you like the feel of.

Pssst. They rose prices again. Some of the MIM artist models are $1649 now (Isbell, Brad Paisley, Jimmy Page).

Some MIA artist models are $3000 now (George Harrison and Brent Mason).

Even this Chrissie Hynde went up $100. Used to be 1449, now its 1549.

Why do people always ask this? If it's a Fender electric guitar and it doesn't say "American" in the name then it isn't MIA. And, with few exceptions, if it isn't MIA then it's made in Mexico.
Because look at all the words you just used to try to explain this. Instead of just putting MIA/MIM in their description.

Fender does this to be deceptive to its customers.

Lots of things annoy me and I'm getting more crotchety as I get older. That being said the scope of my crotchety-ness has not yet creeped into the MIM or MIA space lol.
It should be asked every time all the time until fender puts it on all their model titles.

It's all deceptive. Other companies have specific tier names. Only fender refuses to clearly state it.

Fender Jim Adkins is Made in Indonsia.

Then theres a slew of Signature Squiers. But those have Squier in their name.

And Japan has dozens of signature models for mostly Japanese artists with exception of Richie Kotzen. And they had North American artists like Geddy Lee and Marcus Miller, but those moved to Mexico in 2013. But on the used market you might get one or the other. The mexican Marcus Miller is an upgrade as it has an actual battery cavity and CnC body.
