A bit of research shows:

- Both Gen 1 and Gen 2 has no Spotify native software support. (Spotify connects through Airplay, which means Siri cannot communicate back and forth with the Spotify App)

- Gen 1 (2018) pricing was cut down due to lackluster sales from $349 to $299 then later discontinued in 2021. Pricing rumors had it start at $199. But Gen 2 (2023) pricing is at $299, again.

- Gen 2 has the S7 chip which Apple shares usage for their Apple watch series. The S7 shares the same SoC architecture with Apple Watch S6, S7 and S8 series. These are based off the A13 bionic chip. For context, the same A13 bionic chip is in the iPhone 11 (2020), iPhone SE 2nd Gen (2020), and iPad 9th Gen (2021). HomePod Gen 1 had the A8 chip, which was a powerful chip at that time but now discontinued.

- Supports Bluetooth 5.0

- Gen 1 had WiFi 5. Gen 2 has WiFi 4.

- Gen 1 had 7 tweeters and Gen 2 has 5.

- Gen 1 had 6 mics and Gen 2 has 4.

- Slightly shorter and noticeably lighter than Gen 1.

- New color Midnight available on the Gen 2.

- Gen 2 has the new temperature and humidity sensors, in which the HomePod Mini will also acquire through a software update. Temp and humidity hardware on the HomePod Mini was secretly available. HomePod Gen 1 support is unknown.

- Listens and sends alert based on Smoke and Monoxide alarms.

- Full-screen, and now bigger display located at the top of the device compared to Gen 1.

- No headphone jack.

- Thread support.

- Matter compatible.

- Dolby Atmos capable.

- Gen 2 has now a detachable power cord.
Get them at 15% off. That is $255 indirectly from Apple. Their $100 gift cards are often available for $85. Look for those.
I'll take both and pay shipping. Gladly

I never understood the price of these…the mini is MSRP $99 so these should be $200 at best…maybe $225….

Reviewers said Apple probably improved their audio magic and it sounds comparable to the older version with less HW.
Hopefully. I only have a mini which I intend to use as a 'doorbell' for my Logitech doorbell if I ever get it hooked up. I listened to a little Apple music out of it and was pretty unimpressed. I like Apple products so will watch this as it rolls out. I wish Apple would get more serious about stuff sometimes...this as an example. The new Homepod is probably a decent speaker on its own, better when paired. But they tout it's home audio capability/flexibility, but I would like it better if Apple had a more traditional sound bar and subwoofer offering instead so there was more mix and match setup capability. At present we have a large array of Sonos stuff...probably 20 or so and am quite happy with it. The Sonos replaced about 20K in home theater stuff that I just 'aged out of'.

Is the lack of direct Spotify support due to Apple or Spotify not creating support for it?

I bought a used gen 1 after it was discontinued for $400 from swappa. Love it. Great sound and responsiveness. The only downside is how long the cord is. Seeing that gen 2 will have a detachable cord sounds like a great improvement along with the better hardware.

I thought the now-discontinued Homepod sounded pretty nice, and I'm picky about speakers, but wasn't willing to shell out for it. Still not willing to pay this much for how I'd be using it (just a morning coffee prep/wakeup ordeal.) Reminded me a lot of that punchy, V-shaped Klipsch sound signature, for better or worse.

I bought a Homepod Mini a few years ago on Black Friday and was pretty underwhelmed in comparison... but still, not that bad in its price segment. It gets plenty loud without distorting or sounding too cheap. Naturally, there's nearly no bass, but plenty of treble. Airplay is probably its biggest strength; it's not just another annoying Bluetooth device in your stack. Connecting/disconnecting is just a few taps away on your iPhone, with never any fuss about re-pairing or waiting for signal.
