Microcenter states: "Total Memory: 8GB | Memory Slots (Total): 1 | Memory Slots (Available): 1)"

IF they are describing accurately, either it's (A) one slot board with 8 in place, almost certainly able to be replaced with 16 stick, or (B) 8 soldered with an open slot for anything up to 16.

I'd bet the latter over a coin toss, and say max is 24.
Thanks for the thoughtful response. I confirmed that it has 8GB onboard memory and 1 open expansion slot. I installed a 16GB DDR 4 3200 ram into the open slot and confirmed it is working and showing a total of 24GB of memory. Thanks! Cheers!

That makes a huge difference on this laptop if it does have the extra RAM slot! Did you purchase it through this deal?

Hey everyone, I know the specs are a little bit unclear so I contacted Asus support regarding this model. I confirmed it only has one soldered RAM slot and one that is changeable up to 8GB of RAM for a total of 16GB!

Yes and no. Depends on the individual and if they Nerd out or not. As u get older it seems easier to just go with out of sight out of mind mentality or you just don't have weeks to go down rabbit hole and have to revert back on ship.
Have to remember to not make too many changes at once. With updates and redesigns it's like starting from scratch. Even worse is when you have to modify for old hardware.
The whole chicken egg paradox. Linux/Windows eh 💩 an 🍎. 👀 like dysfunctional usually have an edge psychology of technical knowledge and open source it's a wild ride; plus old people like to mess with your head. I think it's a right they believe they have earned.

Way overkill.
Also, the screen on this isn't something to write home about which should be considered if you only want the device for YouTube streaming.
All of the things you mentioned can be done on a chromebook or a windows tablet. If your parents watch stuff the most, then I'd suggest to get something cheaper but with a good screen.

Apart from the screen, this can handle all the things you mentioned.
Please recommend a laptop under $600 for writers/translators

So picked one of these up Friday. Also picked up a 16gb Patriot memory module that's on sale for 35 bucks. Laptop now has 24GB of RAM. Was able to shrink the C: drive and install Kubuntu in the free space. My biggest complaint is Asus is doing something odd with their new computers that breaks keyboards without a kernel patch for each model. I had to use an external keyboard and install the 6.1.8 mainline kernel. Now I am dual booting. The system has more than enough power. I actually was quite surprised. You have the open memory slot. NVMe is replaceable and so is the wireless card.

I wish they included a normal black esc keycap. What is up with the Orange???

In terms of speed, it's okay for basic editing. The screen is not very color accurate though, so don't plan on using it for any color sensitive video or graphics work

Picked this up on Saturday from Microcenter and so far I'm very happy with it. It definitely is larger than I'm used to and a little blocky, which was a change from my 13in work laptop but has grown on me. This is VERY easy to pop open and add some RAM--I added a 16GB stick and performance has been great. I'll probably pop in a larger SSD at some point too (the ease/ability to upgrade RAM/storage is a big plus for me). Great value IMO at the 500+40 I spent on the RAM! I was looking at some nicer laptops (specifically, a Lenovo at Costco going in and out of stock for 899) and I'm really happy I grabbed this one.

The orange escape key is weird and kinda retro. It's nice that it includes a fingerprint sensor and a camera blocker. The screen is definitely an improvement over my last budget ASUS.

Think Asus plays a bit fast and loose with the IPS term. They refer to it as "IPS LEVEL"
Has anyone viewed this in person, does it appear to be IPS when viewed at all angles or does it blur/color shift somewhat upon angles.

16.0-inch, WUXGA (1920 x 1200) 16:10 aspect ratio, IPS-level Panel, LED Backlit, 60Hz refresh rate, 300nits, 45% NTSC color gamut, Anti-glare display, Non-touch screen, (Screen-to-body ratio)85%
