I kept going back and forth between the Onkyo, Denon, and Yamaha for a new receiver and so I did a ton of research. The Onkyo 6050, the Denon 760h and Yamaha TSR-700(the Costco trinity) all have some variety of HDMI board issues, that were corrected to varying degrees of success with later hardware and/or firmware updates, so as part of that process, I talked to a local hifi store owner about higher end models that might not have those issues. I brought up the Onkyo RZ50 and he put it like this, "Onkyo is now owned by Sharp. In 35 years of selling hifi equipment I have never known Sharp to make a high quality product." That stopped me from considering the TX-RZ50.

Of the Costco trinity, consensus was that the Denon worked the best, but sounded the worst. The Yamaha sounded the best, but people still could never get it to work with HDMI for 4k/120hz or VRR. The Onkyo has the prettiest menus, was the easiest to setup, and has the nicest features(2x hdmi out). The Onkyo sounded slightly better than the Denon, but still noticeably worse than the Yamaha, and was the least reliable. I like products that work and are reliable, so I landed on Denon.

I've had both happen to me in the past. What I did once on a different deal was bought the new one and then left/got back in the return line and said it was the old one - that way you're not having to repack/return an opened item that they're now stuck with.

Why would anyone in their right mind pay just $30 dollars less for a refurbished when then can buy it new for $30 bucks more.

I tried both and preferred the Onkyo. Started with the Onkyo TX-NR6050 at $440 and was disappointed by the sound compared to my old Denon AVR-3803, returned the Onkyo and bought the Denon AVR-S760 at $400, the S760 sounded thin or small and had some minor HDMI wonkyness which had me return the S760, finally back to the NR6050 at $400.

Kinda interesting how there are a few in this thread that have noticed the difference in sound quality between the Denon, Onkyo and Yamaha. Many don't believe there is a difference but there definitely is. Only way to really tell is by swapping receivers into the same system and spending a few days tweaking and listening to the same source material. I've had the Denon S750H, S760H and the S920W and could never get them to sound as good as my Yamaha's and Onkyo's with movie soundtracks.

Solid AVR. Have it hooked up to a - currently - 3.1 system, and it works great! Audyssey seems to work well and do stuff. Seems like an easy entry into AVRs at the price point before going to the higher end.

I agree with this assessment. I bought a tsr-700 and returned it and purchased this 760 from Costco instead. The Yamaha sounded awesome and got louder and I like the app way better but I could never get it to handshake with my 2019 Vizio. It was a nightmare trying to watch anything. My family were ready to kill me. I was constantly plugging and unplugging stuff and power cycling everything for 15 minutes before I could get anything to work. The Denon has been fine and works 90 percent of the time without any hiccups.

I just purchased this to replace my old pioneer that did not support the new HDMI standard. I was forced to connect everything through the TV but the issue was that the TV would not connect using ARC and I had to manually change each time and the only audio output from tv was DD.
With this Denon, I have all devices connected and only using tv for picture. Now the receiver picks up all the diff audio types (dd+, Atmos, DTS) for all devices. Not sure about the Atmos since I don't have any speakers that support it. I did run the audio calibration test and ill be dammed if it detected the speaker connections being backwards....I swear I followed the right cable with the stripe LOL. Results were surprising as it set the sub to the lowest and 2-3 less for the satellites. guess i like bass a little too much. I watched a blue ray and streamed a 4k movie and was happy with the results.
For music i like the stereo mode but since I have my 2 satellites going through the sub, my other sub is not in use. In order to have all the speaker and 2nd sub working is to change from stereo to the next setting which activates the rest of the speakers.
Using the phone app is nice and can prob do everything the remote can.

Does anyone else feel that Denon just sounds flat and lifeless compared to older models? And that the build quality on the Yamahas really took a dive compared to models from just 5 years ago? I just can't get past the new Yamaha facing and uni-knob.

I got this on the Costco clearance a couple months back. At that price, it was an easy choice. The OSD interface feels like a 20+ year old VCR. It also wouldn't play nicely with HDMI-CEC, that $500 70" Sharp TV, and a Fire 4k. Seeing as it is a spare room, I didn't spend a lot of time troubleshooting a bunch of budget components, I just removed the Fire 4k. Otherwise sounds fine, nothing spectacular. For the same price, I'd probably lean towards the Onkyo though.
