Been giving Nutro to our 150-220 lb big boys for well over a decade. They reportedly have a lifespan between six and 10 years. We've not had one pass below the age of 12.5.
Unfortunately has a poor rating on dog food advisor (3.5/5). Going to pass. For those interested: https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/do...ple-review
My dog has been on costco salmon flavor for awhile as well. Costco brand dog food is great too. Yes, it is not recommended to change dog food often. But if you do:

Day 1: 25% new diet and 75% old diet.
Day 3: 50% new diet and 50% old diet.
Day 5: 75% new diet and 25% old diet.
Day 7: 100% new diet.

How did you even get to the step of mixing water and peanut butter in a bag? LMAO Also the Frenchie is 8 years old so have you been doing this for 8 years or is this a relatively new phenomenon?

From what I've read on the topic in the past, picky eating tends to come from being offered a variety of foods and getting used to that. If she is used to PB coated food from your hand then you're going to have some work to do to reverse that. At the end of the day, dogs won't starve themselves to death. They can go days or even a week without eating so long as they're healthy otherwise. Your best bet is to pick a food and stick with it. Put it out for your dog at meal time and if they don't touch it after about 30 minutes take it away and put it out again at the next meal. Don't feed them table scraps or any other food in the meantime. Eventually they will give in and eat what they're given. Once they do that, don't switch up their food to 'find one they like', just stick with the same one and keep the routine going. You might feel like this is cruel but it's really not, it's in the best interest of the dog to have a steady and consistent diet.

Imagine you eat the same food everyday. It maybe good and healthy for you but who can eat the same food everyday?

While I use Dog Food Advisor it is to important to read the review and understand that the 5 star rating scale doesn't tell the whole story

In this case the Large Breed Chicken and Rice formula is 3/5 and the Natural/Limited Ingredients 4/5 have many of the same ingredients. The ingredients that knock down this review are those of questionable value like brewer's rice, chicken fat, coconut and flax seed. Questionable like "there may be some benefits but aren't sure" not "high fructose corn syrup" bad.

Dog Food Advisor is up in the air about "grain free". It's a fashionable term but veterinarians are warning that "grain free" food hasn't been shown to be healthier - just more expensive.

There have only been two Nutro recalls in the past 30 years: one for possible mold, the other for small pieces of plastic from a processing machine. Blue Wilderness has over a dozen recalls.

Mars also owns the prestigious Waltham Petcare Science Institute in Leicestershire, England.

In for 1. Thanks OP!

Incorrect. It's actually a 3/5. Look at the list, go down to large breed chicken and brown rice.

It's a very poor rating. Has me wondering why. DFA honestly seems all over the place with their ratings, so take it for what it's worth.

Dog Food Advisor takes marks off for non-chelated and doesn't give marks for hip/joint health for older dogs because that's not a data point that can be compared for other special recipes like puppy growth kibble.

Just an FYI, I hope you've heard about the uptick in cases of dog breeds with enlarged heart illness (DCM) that normally do not have these conditions. FDA performed a study on this and while it is inconclusive, there seems to be an association with certain diets / brands. Check out the report and learn for yourself more.

https://www.fda.gov/animal-veteri...iomyopathy

The whole dog/pet food industry is a sham. Companies paying "review" sites to rank their foods higher has led to unintended consequences. It's a shame that we can't trust dog foods, review sites, youtubers, even the stores themselves.

I switched my dog back to grain-based diets and am avoiding grain-free as they typically use legumes as filler products for grains.
Our vet advised against grain free foods. She said it has been causing an increase in heart related issues as well. She said any major brand dog food is fine.
