The Amazon page says:
So, it there so there someone KNOWLEDGEABLE that can recommend something decent (or better)?
Thanks .
I am currently using an ATOTO S8.
Let me explain why you might want to consider something like this. I am also going to attempt to clear a few things up.
Point 1....there are many tiers in the Chinese No-Name market of stereo units.
You have the $50 special that you can pick up on Ebay all the way up to a ....we will call them...Top Tier line,
And while I understand this is subjective...I would probably rate a few in the top tier line...in order of highest quality, down....
Joying (I think about the best you can get)
ATOTO or maybe Pumpkin
Eonon
If you are just getting started in this world, I would probably stay with these names.
Point 2....it is not just the name to pay attention to. You need to CLOSELY look at the specs.
Just like with tablets..... for example....a first gen Apple Ipad is getting long in the tooth and will not run apps as smoothly as it once did.
I would suggest at least a Quad Core and 16-32GB head unit.
Point 3.
While these can work as stand-alone units, their best case tends to be head units that you plan to plug into amps.
The better units of these tend to have excellent DACs but the outputs may not be as strong as what many of the name brands offer. My ATOTO can go toe to toe with some top-tier units in audio processing...but I use it plugged into amps.
Point 4...
These units are not generally as refined...but that does not mean that they have less features or are less reliable.
As an example...the Pioneer that I had was a $700 unit with built n GPS, etc. At about a year, the GPS failed..and features began failing after that. The warranty was for a year so I was simply out.
My ATOTO has been running 2...maybe 3 years by now....and is going strong.
What you are going to find is that your traditional brands do the basics well...but can't stray far away from that. They have simple, usually Linux-based software in the background...but it is not open for edits. What you get is what you get.
These Chinese brands are running on Android, for the most part.
Do they glitch more? Yes.
But let me be clear, I see...maybe a glitch every 2-3 months. If I power the unit down and power it back up, it works fine and I typically will not see another glitch for another 2-3 months.
But I can load new apps on this...just like I can on a tablet.
I can use any media player that I want. I can use my cell as a hotspot and stream Netflix, Plex, etc.
The screen has a better picture.
As I said earlier, the DAC is notably better. It is capable of playing a much wider format list of media.
You can use a microSD card and GREATLY expand storage.
You can customize far past what a typical unit can do. For example, mine boots with my car brand of Toyota when I turn the car on.
And that is something else that I need to mention.... when turning the car on after it sits for several hours, it can take 20-30 sec to fully boot. Truthfully, I do not even notice it anymore.
And it has memory...so if it was on in the last hour, it does not do that. It comes up immediately where you were.
The last thing that I will mention on this point is that the instructions for installation are not always as clear as a mainstream brand. But my experience is that there are many helpful videos and forums to compensate.
And now to Point 5..my final point....Value for the dollar.
Might this break down in 2-3 years? Yes.
But keep in mind that the Pioneer proves that the mainstream is not immune to that.
(Although I have not had a need to reach out to the maker in-warranty, from what I have heard, ESPECIALLY Joying..but also ATOTO is known for going out of its way to make the person happy.)
So even if my ATOTO were to die tomorrow, I could buy a new, latest-gen unit, get another couple of years out of it..and still be miles ahead of a mainstream unit's cost/lifespan.
As far as features...there are some mainstream units that can match the features of these.....and they seemed to start at $1300 the last time I checked.
In conclusion, while this might not be right for everybody....you would be cheating yourself to just dismiss these units without at least doing some real research.
So, is there a list of basic minimum specs you'd recommend?
Is it possible to get such a recommended Joying or ATOTO unit in the $200-300 range?
Also, one or more good sources of honest, accurate, comprehensive reviews of these units?
Thanks again.

Hardest part is working out which harness to buy for your specific car. Maybe a few hours research for that plus sat radio (using the car's factory antenna) and then <1h install. Used YouTube videos to understand how to access/remove current radio.
After install it was easy to configure all buttons on steering wheel to work with radio. Apple play and android auto work fine.
Microphone is crap but you can always buy another. Every Amazon review says the same thing about that.
I would recommend extended warranty (cheap via amazon). Or use credit cards that offer extended warranty.
Their support is not perfect but ok. They do try and help. There is a sub Reddit (same name as manufacturer) where people help each other. Enjoy
PS I can't speak for the unit in OP. My unit runs on Linux and not android (per product range comparison listing). It does boot up within 15-20 seconds or so. If turning on and going straight to reverse/reverse camera then it will do that instantly.

The specs that I would pay attention to are CPU and memory.
Again....bottom baseline would be Quad core, 4gig Ram and 16-32GB memory.
I would probably lean heavily on the side of 32GB. And I would likely not consider under 4Gig of ram. It is not that you can't add a card for more memory but just like a tablet, the apps usually run off the internal memory only and the expanded storage is for media files.
In general, think phone/tablet. What specs would make you move on from considering a phone?
The specs you need in a quality phone/tablet are what you are going to need here.
As for a single source, that one is a little tougher. I tend to research things to death.....in general. In this case, it was a lot of Youtube reviews, Reddit, XDA Forums is decent. And there was a crap ton of looking up everything that I could find.
Here is something to consider. What are you really looking to do?
If you are planning on playing local radio stations and maybe using Bluetooth to stream music off the phone, then you might be better with a more traditional unit.
If you really want to incorporate more media into the system...take full advantage of GPS...build a really quality sound system, etc.... then this might be the way to go.
But let me be clear...you are not going to find a quality Android head unit for $50....despite the ads on Ebay. These are a fraction the price of their mainstream counterparts with the same specs. In fact, the mainstream at a MUCH steeper cost does not boast many of the specs that these do.
But you need to go into this with eyes wide open.
I said before that these can do as much...and frankly more than their mainstream counterparts...but they are not as refined.
You are going to notice that the metal walls of the head unit is thinner gauges. But you are going to find that the screen has a higher resolution and a good one is usually IPS...vs the low-end screens in the mainstream.
You are going to find the OS to be more like a rooted OS and not like the OEM interface you might find in a mainstream unit.
But the OS will have fewer limitations, more ability to adapt, and will be much more able to be customized.
I can go on but you get the idea.
In the areas that I care about, these do more.
And having owned this one, when I do need another one day, I will be going with another ATOTO, Joying, XTRON, or maybe even a Pumpkin. (Based on the rep, I am leaning to Joying....they seem to be the kings right now)
But I will understand that it will likely cost $200-$400. And comparing that to a low-end head unit from the mainstream that can only play radio and stream Bluetooth is comparing apples to oranges. You need to be comparing that to a much higher-end mainstream that can boast similar specs.
Can be done with the 12v power from a computer PSU. The combined cost will probably be so high that you could have just bought a much better system meant to be used in a home though.
Powered by 12v cigarette port so it can be easily convert to ac prong for in-home house.

This is great! Never knew portable CarPlay units were an option.

Pros:
+ Wireless Apple Carplay has been very reliable and convenient (although there is a 1-2 second audio delay when watching videos)
+ Backup Camera (sold separately) works instantly when you put your car in reverse
+ Bootup times from the default low-power mode are near instant
+ Can connect to an ODBII sensor if you want to use Torque
Cons:
- My unit has very poor color calibration for the LCD screen and there is no way for me to get white balance to 6500k. This probably won't bother most people who are used to uncalibrated displays but is something to consider if you're sensitive to that.
- There is no ambient light sensor to control screen brightness. The screen does not auto-dim like it should when my headlights turn on. Support says this should work but I've seen other users online with my same issue.
- I cannot get my Steering Wheel Controls to work even when I use a Metra Axxess ASWC-1
Overall I think this head unit is an absolute steal for this price and you get a bunch of features that you would need to pay many times more for if you went with a popular brand. I do personally wish I paid slightly more for something that has a more color accurate screen and also works with my SWC.
You need to connect the dimming wire externally outside of the harness. Honda works different. Tap into grey wire at the hazard switch.
Not sure what your issue is with the SWC but you probably have it connected wrong if this stereo supports that specific controller. Need to connect to canbus.
