Unless I'm not understanding the deal, you can buy $100 worth of full-price gear, get your 15% off using the REI cc, and still get a $20 GC. You just wouldn't be getting any cash back on the $20 GC purchase. So you pay $85 for $120 worth of gear ($120-$20GC-$15 cash back) versus $102 ($120 - $18 cash back) without this deal.

I work for REI and have been watching their prices for 3 years now. I think you're right.
I have been watching my REI cart for the last 3 months and all the items have increased 10-15%

Anybody know when they usually have their 20% off one full priced item? I remember it's a few times a year usually.

I think this typically happens in March, May, and September?
Coupons in March during "member rewards" season, May's Anniversary Sale, and November's kickoff to winter sale are pretty much guaranteed. A unusual single-day coupon popped up Dec 29th.

Hope not. Manager says they set a record for sales at that particular store last year. Demand has been high since pandemic due to more people wanting to do outside recreation.
Record sales in 2021 led to poor planning (and spending) going in to 2022. Serious belt-tightening and seeking efficiencies in order to return to profitability are the name of the game in 2023.

These $20 MBCs have become commonplace over the last few years. They happen every few months to get current members to shop (then shop again). And when these aren't running there is typically the $30 member acquisition BCs, else there is a member coupon. Rinse, repeat.

Does the "america the beautiful" national park pass qualify for this? It's $79.99 so I'll need to add a filler of course. My pass recently expired and I need a new one.

It should. When you add $100 or more in items to cart online, the $20 bonus card automatically gets added. So it doesn't seem to matter how you pay. Too bad $100 REI gc is excluded from getting the bonus.
Difficult part for me was picking what to order. I wanted three different items all priced about 100...

If I place multiple $100 orders, will I get multiple GCs? It adds to my cart after I already placed one last week, but T&C says 1/account.

Does this work for in-store? or is it online only?

Not sure if anyone else has tried, but worse case you place a second order and have to return it. So long as returning is not difficult it might be worth the risk. They have tons of language stating you can't use two of them on one order, which must mean you can get two?

I bought two pairs of shoes over $100 but just received a pair and didn't like them so plan to return. My wife is keeping her other pair. Will my $20 gift card still work due to the return? I'm not looking to "steal" $20 but just curious how it works in this scenario

Worked for me in store a few days ago. They handed me a physical gift card when checking out.

Unfortunately in an area with no REIs so I have to pay return shipping. Might do it anyways since I do want some more things.

You can get it refund if you check out via paypal. Yes it is extra effort, but it is an option if you really want the items.

That's the problem with inflation tracking. The basket of goods isn't everyone's goods.
