The $49k number implies that he was looking the Select AWD version at $49k which does qualify for the $7500 tax rebate.
Even the standard range Premium AWD version would qualify with its $54k MSRP.

Also, every Chevy I have encountered from rentals and otherwise has been a very disappointing experience. From a driver ergonomic, infotainment, handling and steering feel, build quality standpoint.
Also, if your commute is only 22 miles round trip, and that is your primary use function for buying the car. I don't think investing in a 20-30k car is in your best financial interest to save money.
EV owners will only use the battery from 20-80% of it's capacity to prolong the life of the battery and avoid battery / range degradation. Therefore your usable range is only 60%. Taking further account for AC / music and other electronics sipping your power you will find that your range is significantly lower than the theoretical.
I would only consider a "long range" variant of any EV purchase (long range mach-e is 58k cheapest), as I do not want to have range anxiety. ESPECIALLY when the infrastructure is not built out. This is why Tesla wins in my eyes. Plethora of chargers, and longest range, unless you're considering the mercedes that are above 6 figures.
Tesla was the only choice at one point. Now there are much better options available.
Quality control is the issue. While I have heard my fair share of tesla issues, and they are more prevalent. Other auto makers are not immune to making similar mistakes, and having even more catastrophic failures. Take the b4zx.
But I'd rather deal with the inconvenience of sending my car back max.. 4,5, maybe 6 times, and getting a free loaner while it's getting repaired, over having to deal with poor charging network for the life of the vehicle. Getting stranded and having range anxiety... no thanks.
For what it's worth. I do not own an EV. I had a pre-order for the VW ID4 because it was the cheapest SUV after tax credit and accounting for free charging. Would have literally paid for itself. However, gas prices fell back down to earth. It made much more sense for me to continue with gas cars for now. Once the EV market is more competitive, and the infrastructure for NON-TESLA cars has improved I'll buy one. To me buying a model Y, even after the most recent cuts, and added tax break, is NOT WORTH IT. Again, I am not a Tesla fan. However, objectively they provide a product no other EV manufacturer can currently match. That product is not more expensive... if you think it is, please reassess after looking at Tesla models after the price cuts.

Someone once told me, an older engineer, I think, that you have to operate by logic alone and not emotion when making decisions to be successful. A lot of engineers today don't seem to understand that anymore. The logic just doesn't work for EVs. All I hear are excuses and nothing about them is vetted. Scary.
