Sorry but that is not entirely true. After activating new phone sim with Google Fi, as long as you don't insert the Google Fi sim in a "different phone", you are fine. Most, like myself, simply tossed the Google Fi sim in a drawer and no problems getting the $500. Using a different carriers sim in the S22 the entire time.

FakeBro, stop spreading Fake information. This is 100% not true. In the last 3-4 months, I purchased 3 Fold4 and all were just activated on the device and now the sim is seating in the drawer, and never got a chargeback. And one device has already crossed the qualification period and the other 2 will complete their qualification window in 12-15 days.

Just an FYI on obtaining a valid cell number to port. I posted this earlier on in the thread but seems to have been overlooked by many as this is a long thread.

I ordered the five dollar per month plan on hello mobile website. It includes talk text and 500 MB data. Free sim and taxes included. The account number for porting is given to you in an email and you can see it as well by logging into your account online, no need to use their app. The porting pin is the last four digits of your phone number, I confirmed that with customer service. Hope this helps some here who need a valid phone number to port and do not want to take any risk with GV numbers as things may have changed this year.

And bonus, the five dollar hello mobile plan second month is free. No coupon code or referral required. This comes in handy just in case the delivery date keeps getting pushed back by Google Fi.

I also bought the boost number from ebay in the 'not risky way' Editor's notes above in order to order the phone. Might be a good idea to mention the 15 day limit on the number up there.

Does this number last after it is activated on fi? Can I port it out to GV after a while and know I have a valid cell number for the future?
Those numbers expire in 13 days. I made the same mistake

What happens if port-in number specified on the order expires? Do we need to keep it active until receiving the phone?

LOL,
Ultra: 6.43 x 3.07 x 0.35 in
Plus: 6.21 x 3.00 x 0.30 in

So basically the only noticeable (possibly) difference in size is the HUGE Ultra is less than 1/4" taller. LOL! Wow. That sure is USELESS BIG compared to your much better choice of a TINY Plus.

The last Google Fi go around, I chose the S22 in part due to comments that said how HUGE the S22 Ultra is. "Expert " consensus was, the Plus wasn't worth the extra money over the basic S22. Either go HUGE or go basic.. Months later noticed a friend with a S22 ultra and checked it out. Instantly noticed how is was NOT huge at all, and easily fit into my shorts front pocket as if it wasn't even there. I deeply regretted getting the S22 instead of the larger S22U (S23U arrives today) Totally shocked that I fell for this "too large" crap. The saving grace at least was able to trade in the Google Fi S22 for $800 towards the T-Mobile S23 Ultra.
Yikes now I am confused. I was going with the Ultra thinking it has better camera and better battery life compared to Plus.

But sounds like the camera (quality) is the exact same - except Ultra has more Zoom?
And battery life is about the same?

Can someone please comment?

I had bought the s22 plus last year. Thinking the s22 ultra is only slightly bigger I had sold the plus and bought the ultra.

After using it for 4 months, I find the s22 ultra is noticeably bigger than the plus. Is particularly when i put in pockets. E.g my trousers have deeper pockets so it's okay. But my track pants have shallower pockets and I am always afraid it will fall out. While the plus was also a big phone its less pronounced.

I think I am done with large phones. I am now thinking either the Pixel 7 or s23.

The better comparison for hardware features is the Plus to Base S23, as they have same camera and features, but the Plus has slightly larger battery as well as larger screen than the base S23, (close to the Ultra's size).

The Ultra has better or larger everything, including many camera features, camera remote pen, RAM, storage, screen, battery, etc.

For most, seems the choices should be Ultra or Base version for the best value and innovation for $$ spent.

If you are going to get a phone valued at $1000+, don't make decisions off of a few forum comments. Spend some time reading hands on reviews or videos from experts that do this thing for a living, as well as users in forums to help you decide (remember, most users, including myself, don't even have all versions to honestly compare, and are going by limited hearsay in forums).

That 10x optical zoom comes in real handy if you have little ones in school and you want the best close-up without digital artifacts. Or sporting events. Or any event where 10X optical zoom is needed in 3x optical zoom just doesn't cut it.

That 10x optical zoom comes in real handy at nude beaches (or so I've been told).
In fact, the 10x was exactly for that reason. But on the rare occasion I'd use it I couldn't justify the size of the Ultra in my pocket.

Include non-rounded corners, which makes it larger. Now add a case. It's a tablet at that point, not a phone.

Look, if it works for you great. But the specs don't always tell the story.

Ultra has a 200MP camera, but it's actually not better quality and in most cases is worse than the 20MP setting. Almost nobody would benefit from the 200MP camera (it's pixel binned).
Ultra has comparable (*slightly* less by 15 mins or so) battery life to the Plus (Plus is slightly more than the Ultra, but barely). They are much longer than the standard S23.
Ultra has an additional camera that is 10x telephoto, for a total of 4 lenses. That's pretty sweet. The other 3 cameras are identical across the entire line.
Ultra has a stylus.
S23+ has rounded corners and personally feels better in the hand to me. The Ultra has square corners and a more rounded screen on the sides, which most people don't like these days (I agree).

Those are the main differences.

Does anyone know (based on past how Google has acted in the past for trade-ins) whether these ridiculously low trade-in values will be bumped up before the 16th? Anyone spoke to Google reps about this? (I plan on calling them later today to ask)

I really don't get the point of the Plus. If you're gonna get a phone that large, might as well step up to the Ultra which is similarly sized but has superior cameras. The 10x optical camera in particular on my S22U has been phenomenally useful during a trip in Europe to get close up shots of architecture from afar and just in general useful for reading signs at distance.

For example, this footage was all captured on the S22U 10x camera during Tankfest 2022 in Bovington, UK: https://youtu.be/vzL6CzVD2D4

I was probably at least 100m away from the action so having that 10x camera in your pocket came really handy.

The 10x camera at this point is like a personal requirement for me, and I look forward to the hopefully slight improvements in software and sensors with the 10x camera when I go to Asia in a few months. Hopefully the S23U arrives in time.
