I was able to add the card to ApplePay. GPay and Paypal are also offered but I did not try to add those.
Hope this helps someone. It's possible they changed this since I did do it over a year ago.

I just received a CS response to this question. They said 6-8 weeks after the spend shows up on a monthly statement. That means you are losing a couple more months of companion pass. I'm a bit bummed about that.

The CS is incorrect. I received my companion pass notification email the day after my statement date closed.
I received my card on 2/13. Made a big appliance purchase on 2/14. Statement end date was 2/25. Got my companion pass email on 2/26. I also got the 30000 bonus points credited to my rapid rewards account on 2/26. I was able to purchase a companion ticket yesterday.
