I paid only one month of service, and let it sit in the box. It's automatically unlocked 180 days later.

Am I the only one terrified of going into a metro store. Have read so many horror stories of mangers making up their own rules (requiring insurance, buying cases, requiring 3 months of service)

Which state? Does anybody know if we have pay taxes in NJ? I was told to pay 33 dollar taxes in authorised dealer shop.
I only had to pay less then $3 dollars in taxes for 2 lines. $133 OTD. NJ as well.

So is it better to play dumb or play smart at the Metro store to avoid getting finessed?

Just go to a corp store and you won't have to play dumb or anything. Only thing they ask you is if you want cell insurance which i declined. took less then 15 mins to leave the store after i arrived.

I went to 3 different ones today: 1st one said there is an extra $40 "phone activation fee" plus I have to get insurance. 2nd one said I have to sign up for a $72 a month plan. 3rd one said there are a lot of taxes on iphones, it will be like $250.

I guess the second one would have been the best deal, but I was already too angry.
It's $72 "plan" because it's $60 + $12 insurance. Still dishonest.

I got a number from Google Voice yesterday. I dont have sim card, but I can call and receive text from anyone from that number. Should I be able to get an iphone by switching this google number?

Pretty funny experience - and consistent with other posters!

Went to the Metro store nearby and they claimed that besides the fees above the price would be $399. I pointed out the promo, after which they said it would be $99. I insisted but was told that there was "fine print." Called a bunch of other stores and the phone was either OOS or they claimed there was no such promotion.

Why didn't you just get the Boost mobile $23 refurb XR iphone? Once you get it you can port out with no problems. I heard some people get declined for using google voice numbers.

I showed them website which very clearly stated $0 and it hasn't moved the guy. Anyway, this was one of those "nice to haves."

Was it an authorized dealer or a corporate store?

One manager told me that I must be with previous carrier for 4 months to be eligible to buy iPhone 11 from them. I wanted to buy 2 phone for 2 lines for my senior citizen parents and they said I must bring them in store to buy the phones for them!
Unless that # was recently ported out of Metro to your current carrier, how would the manager know how long the # has been active with the current carrier?
