I paid only one month of service, and let it sit in the box. It's automatically unlocked 180 days later.

Am I the only one terrified of going into a metro store. Have read so many horror stories of mangers making up their own rules (requiring insurance, buying cases, requiring 3 months of service)

Do you need to be with metro for 6 months to unlock phone ?
According to multiple reports from previous users, the phone will unlock 6 months after activation regardless whether you stop service after a month.

You can dig through the old threads for specific confirmations, but below is a quote from a previous thread …
Quote from OldThread :
To have the phone unlock automatically in 180 days (6 months)

You do not. repeat do NOT have to pay for service for 180 days.

the above has been true for most every metro deal in the past.
both apple and android

Most people get the 1 month service.
Then simply place phone in a drawer [or use as wi fi device].
wait 6 months.

I did this deal just last week at an authorized store (corporate store not easy to get to) but the price of the phone was $49.99.

What are the odds they will refund me the $49.99 since I am still within the 14 day return period?
Try it, and let the rest of us I is how it goes?

Did US Mobile give you account and pin in trial? Did you call or chat?

But then you can't use the phone number on another service right?

I just visited a Metro corp store and successfully ported-in a Google Voice number. It was very painless. The big surprise was that there was no tax on the phone, so I only ended up paying $80.08 ($60 service fee + $20 device activation fee + $0.08 "regulatory fee recovery on activation"). Yes, I know this is set by the state but it's not what I was expecting as I live in CA. The other surprise was that my GV number had finished porting over before I had even gotten home!

I have read about the horrible experiences with Metro stores that some of you have shared here, but this is not what I experienced at all. The guys at the store that I visited were super nice and not pushy about the upsells. I don't know if this has anything to do with the fact that the store will be closing in a month but it was a very pleasant experience.

Anyways, thanks to those of you who have provided help and advice, and good luck to those of you still trying to get this deal!
How did they port your Google voice number?

I'm not condoning that, but...they work on commission. When you get the freebie/cheap deal without the extras, you drive down their averages and metrics. If they sell this deal all month long, they're due to get fired. That industry is completely unrealistic in how it expects salespeople to perform, and they motivate with fear and penalty. This is why you get lied to at the store. Why you "have" to add insurance or buy a case or add a new line (truth: corporate always has a string attached too) Plus, most of the wireless salespeople I've known in my life were hustlers and slickdealers who know exactly how you're gaming the system...so, maybe throw them a bone if you're making out well?

TL;DR: don't blame the people that work there, wireless companies are TERRIBLE (especially prepaid, and franchise-owned stores of the big brands)

Did anyone tried to port out from freedompop or redpocket?
I successfully ported two phones from FreedomPop last spring for a similar deal. I don't know whether it was because I was only with FP for less than 24 hours, or porting out from FP is sometimes challenging, but it took a corporate specialist from Metro several hours to finish the porting out the following day.

FYI, the SIM cards from FP can be purchased for a few bucks from Target.

Because with the now defunct Rewards program, I paid $65 out of pocket for 2x iPhone 11s. Just wait until they bring Add A Line rewards back up to join.

$80 for iPhone 11 seems like a steal. Unlocked after 6 months. But port-in is required, right? Need that in the title.

Wonder if they still charge sales tax on the phone in store.

They just asked for the phone number, account number (which for GV is just the 10 digit phone number), and transfer PIN (voicemail PIN), and simply entered it into their system. They did not have to make any calls to Google to get the number released or anything like that. On my end I had unlocked the number ahead of time ($3 cost) and set the voicemail PIN (though someone here pointed out that if you don't set the voicemail PIN, the transfer PIN is simply the last 4 digits of your GV number).
