The shelves are easy to put together and very stable, though you have to understand how the supports work and that they snap into the grooves in the poles. I actually bought wheels for my shelves, it was as easy as taking one of the adjusting feet to the Home Depot screw/bolt checker and seeing what it fit, then ordering on Amazon or eBay (I forget). I assume this is safe. Note that using wheels drops the weight capacity a lot, you can see how much by checking the specs on a set that comes with wheels, they'll quote (for example, from an 18x36" unit) 250lb/shelf on levelling feet or 120lb/shelf on wheels.
The other thing to watch if you want really high capacity is which way the wires run. The truly high-capacity shelves have the wires running front-back, with a few running side-side underneath. The mid-capacity (like this unit) have the main wires running side-side, with a few underneath running front-back. This both reduces the strength (and weight of unit) and also makes it slightly harder to slide boxes off the shelves, as they can catch on the wires. The former will have a higher capacity rating in the specs. I always say "my next set will have the wires running front-back" and then I give in since I don't need that weight load.
