Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

You can't. It's part of the phone's firmware.
Surprisingly I don't see it on A14 and N20 5G phones. Not sure why

There IS no app on current phones. The functionality is baked into the firmware and delivered to Metro like that by Moto. I'm looking at one right now, and there's no app.

No more .New batch N200 phones are locked for Metro only as well...the loophole is closed 🔒
Not to be offensive to you with this question, but would you mind quoting your source of this closing the loophole on the N200 please?.I spent this morning searching for confirmation that the N200 would work on the T-mobile network from day 1 and I found some posts confirming it would, but I did not come across anyone saying they have recently closed the loophole....so do you have personal experience of this or any link to where you saw this in a discussion thread recently?
Many thanks

I guarantee you that you cannot just put a Tracfone sim in a phone and it will magically work. Tracfone locks their sims to phones. If you want to use a Metro phone on Tracfone you need a BYOD (Sim card) and register the IMEI with Tracfone.

If someone has Red Pocket, you can put the Red Pocket sim in any phone. It's best to use a GSMT (T-mobile) sim to test out the Metro phones before the unlock period. I am speaking from personal experience with Red Pocket.

In theory a Post paid T-Mobile sim should work on any phone.

Why can't I add this to my cart to purchase on the website? Are they forcing me to go into a metro store?

Out of stock temporarily for shipping. Check back early AM. Likely Monday now. That's what happened on the last deal.

on the A14, go to Apps in settings, scroll to Network unlock and click on it, then click open in bottom left...

N20: go to settings, about device, unlock is at the bottom

Can I just use this as a Wifi phone? not paying any monthly fee (except the first $40 month).

Do I need to cancel any $40 auto monthly payment? If any.

thanks,

I got this in December, it's a great phone for $40.
Although it came with 1-month service, in fact, it offered one more month service for free until they cut the line right after 2 months from activating the phone.
