Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

I bought a Samsung A14 in a similar Metro T-mobile deal ($0 for phone, $40 plan) a couple weeks ago. I'd rather have this Moto phone. Anyone know if Metro will let me exchange the A14 for the Moto without changing my plan? Today has been 2 weeks since I purchased the A14.

Could you please post the link to that thread? I'm regularly looking for Metro phones that work on T-Mobile out of the box.
Is there a list of ones that do?

my tracfone stylus 2021 was not compatible with ATT, despite the moto list

...

So I was wondering if this metro branded phone had some restrictions as well compared to a phone sold by motorola.
They are compatible on paper, but ATT is the one playing you here.
I had the same thing with Edge, 5G not available on ATT because it is not "ATT certified"...

This metro phone has only the metro 180 days restriction compared to an unlocked phone by Motorola.

Also works on the Samsung A23 and it is in stock online. Only difference is you have to sign-up for the $50 plan.

And yet sleazy resellers are able to order them by the handfuls.

I can't imagine they would. You could always buy this one and sell the Samsung either now or after the unlock in 180 days. That Samsung basically unused in 6 months will be worth quite a bit more than 40 on the used market, if you are willing to actually sell it though.

I saw in one of the other posts that this nice Incipio Duo case in denim is only $4.99 plus tax shipped from Verizon [verizon.com]. I jumped on that one. Most decent ones shipped from the USA on ebay are $8+.

They may try to charge you $20 in store, but if you need it, go on in and see if you can get them to drop the activation charge, plus they will probably try to do some add ons that aren't necessary.
