Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

damn, the 1080p60 video recording quality sucks ass compared to the 1080p30 recording.

60fps recorded video has more jagged lines everywhere. looks lower quality

I think orders sometimes also don't go thru if they can find an available phone number in the area code you pick.

I picked an alternative newer area code that launched last year for me metro area and the order then went thru.

I just received the phone today. Put the SIM card into the phone and powered it up. The phone will recognize the Metro network, but at this point is not activated yet. Went to the Metro website to try to activate it, but of course I don't have the phone number to login.

A quick search through my emails, I found one from Metro which was sent to me when they shipped the phone. In that email there is a link to a webpage to track the shipping (the link to Metro's website, not to UPS). If you click on that and scroll all the way to the bottom, you'll find a ACTIVATE button. Click on this button, and it will activate the phone.

Now you just have to wait a few minutes and restart your phone. In my case I restarted it a couple of times with about ~ 5-10min wait. Voila the phone is now active and the phone number is listed under settings. Hope this help someone.

I also saw that ACTIVATE button on Metro's track shipping webpage. However when the phone was delivered by UPS at 2PM yesterday, that activate button was no longer on the webpage.
Ended up calling support about 3PM from another phone, gave them my order number, etc. They advised me of my new phone number, and activated the phone. Restarted phone, phone number had not populated yet in settings>phone>sim, even after restart, but was able to make calls anyway.

Then I get an email at 8PM from T-mobile "Ready. Set. Activate!" with a link to activate service, lol.

First one. Haven't ordered from them previously.
Some people have said that changing shipping addresses, CCs, using a different internet connection or computer could avoid triggering that message. In my experience over the last several months I placed 3 orders to my home (2 to me and 1 to my wife). 4th didn't go through using either of our identities. Then 2 to another residential address went through. Kept trying to get a 4th order through to my home address but always failed until I switched to ordering on a Macbook (I normally use Windows) using my corporate VPN and using a completely new CC. I know some companies keep a list of "high risk IP ranges". My normal IP seems to trigger captchas on other websites as well. And that in combination with maybe other factors like orders going to the same address would trigger the "contact us" message.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know if you activate the phone a month later after receiving it?
I activated my phones immediately because I wanted to start the 180 day unlock timer.

From the wiki:

did you already have all the updates ?
I got my phone in November. There have been several updates since, and I installed them all. They seem to be keeping up well with updates on the moto g stylus 5g 2022.

Metro's offshore customer service reps cannot be counted upon for accuracy. The SIM activates automatically around 2 weeks following purchase.

Did you install the latest moto camera settings update from Google play? There was a new one yesterday. Its something already on the phone, not something you have to add.

Did you use the same or different CC for you and your wife? I tried using different names and addresses but it still didn't go through. I'm not sure if it's because I used the same last name. I don't want to use a random name with my address & CC because I want to make sure I receive the package as well if the order goes through.

Activate, use it for a month until that new account completely cancels, then call.
While that would work, in theory couldn't you put current sim in new phone and change devices in app since it's a metro locked phone it should recognize imei number. Then put new sim in old phone and activate that way to get around waiting a month. Or is new sim already tied to new phone imei?
