Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

When was the first time this device was available via Metro? Has it not been 6 months since it has been released? Surely there must be people with this phone unlocked via the 6 month method. If there aren't then this post should be edited to steer away any people interested in a network unlocked device.
Good question. I would like to hear from people too. I'll know in 3 months. If not, I'll just continue using it as my home WiFi phone, like I do now.

Unsure of when it was released/available on Metro, but I remember seeing it in August but it wasn't free with plan. I think it was $10 with port in and $70-90 for new number. I don't think it became free until November/December, which is when a lot of people here jumped on it. We'll have to wait for more confirmation around June.
I bought one back then, mine unlocked 1-19-23 with no issues using the settings unlock.

Do you use Google voice or something else for wifi calling?

This is because you bought the phone last July or before. Not sure Metro has patched up the loophole now. Below is a discussion thread from Reddit,

Yes, Google Voice for texts and voice. Though I can also access the texts from my live phone by installing and linking the messages app. I don't do much voice on Android since I have a landline. And for work, we use Teams.

Thanks. Since my data is still working [fingers crossed that it stays that way], time to get a Google Voice #.

And, of course, Reddit is gospel. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)LMAO The know-it-all there says paying for it for 6 months is "implied." Total B.S. The language as it stands is a legal contract and is as plain as day. Nothing has changed since 2020 when that document was posted. Metro has continued to unlock phones with that policy/contract in place since.

Redditors have opinions, nothing else.

Well never visit a franchise Metro store period, its like going to buy a used car.

ONLY go to Corporate stores. I know, I have been with metro for 6+ years.
I don't know which the local store is, but in any case even ignoring the used-car feel, if I'm reading the offer right the N20-new-line ($50+$40) is only $10 more than N20-port-in offer ($0+$60+$20), and doesn't require a trip to a store. Even a good store still means maybe wasting 30 min waiting, to be told it's OOS. Or if it's in stock, 30 min waiting my turn and 30 min while the salesperson writes up the order.

(Am I right with my math? N20 new line is $50 + $40 plan, while N20 port-in is $0 + $60 plan + $20 activation fee, per the published offer?)

We'll all find out in 6 months time. Worst case is we'll end up with a nice wi-fi only device for $40 which is still not too bad.

I can't complain about the OnePlus Nord N20.
And the 5G data is still going. I lost being able to make calls.

Thanks I know, the discussion had already drifted to OnePlus and other phones. How did you pay $40 for N20? Go to a store? The terms seemed to imply a $60 plan and $20 activation. I guess I'm reading wrong.

Received my phone today, surprisingly snappy. Feels just as fast as a SD845 device. The 6GB of ram is very good for $40. I hope these are really network unlockable, this is way better than my Moto One 5G Ace

It seems unnecessary to wait for 6 months but can have it unlocked by a small payment to receive an unlock code. Has anyone successfully unlocked the phone by the reliable online unlock service?
