Metro will activate the SIM within 2 weeks of your delivery date, but I don't think it will automatically activate your phone/trigger the device's internal unlock counter. You have to install the SIM and turn on the phone for that. I noticed my phone's unlock date was exactly 181 days after I put my SIM into the phone and not when the SIM was activated two weeks prior, so it was a good thing I put it into my phone before the first month was over. Might've had to pay for another month and start the counter from there.

Can confirm that I only spent money on the first month and kept it in a drawer afterwards for exactly 180 days after my SIM activated, but it said I wasn't eligible for a unlock until about 2 weeks later after that (180 days after I finally turned the phone on with the SIM inside). Bought this phone back in June (with the deal at discounted price with first month, not this better deal at free with first month) and unlocked just about 2 weeks ago.

The unlock setting (built into the phone, not a separate app) gives a very distinct, red X with message saying that I didn't reach the requisite 180 days to unlock the device, but that message about the 180 days disappeared after waiting a few weeks longer and in its place was a link to try a 'permanent unlock', which worked.

People on the MetroPCS subreddit have stated that the 180 day trick for unlocking has been "patched" in newer phones. Has anyone with a Moto G Stlus 5G 2022 from MetroPCS been able to network unlock their phone? Or are we just going by what works on other MetroPCS phones?

why is this deal getting so much attention?

Oneplus N20 is a super quick phone with s a gorgeous OLED screen and its free when you port in or $50 if you want a number from Metro. What gives?
I would really like an N20, and willing to port in a number to get it. But it's $90 online with a new number ($50 phone + $40 plan), or $80? ($0 phone + $60 plan + $20 activation) with a port-in. Plus the port-in requires a store visit, which is a deal breaker for me (last time I did it was some years ago, I waited >30min for my name to be called and then they were OOS and claimed there were additional fees on my 2nd choice, which there weren't and which I didn't pay). At that point I'd rather pay an extra $10 and avoid the store [sorry good Metro stores]. And I'm still tempted.

This is free without port. That's why.
Port costs $5
I have seen these phones side by side ,the N20 screen and glass looks FAR superior, and has the same chipset. And its cameras look cooler lol

Well never visit a franchise Metro store period, its like going to buy a used car.

ONLY go to Corporate stores. I know, I have been with metro for 6+ years.

That's nice and all. But has anyone here unlocked a Moto G Stylus 5G 2022 180 days after activation without continuous service?

If the unlock loophole of one month only is patched, which I'll confirm in roughly four months, the reason these things get patched is because people bring it to attention of customer service and it eventually gets the attention of someone who can make changes. People telling customer service that they heard from XYZ site that you only need a month, etc, is a quick way for any loophole to get patched.

Complaining to the FCC might get the phone unlocked with the caveat of the device not being able to work on any T-Mobile networks, so proceed at your own risk.

tl;dr - I'll find out in 4 months if the "newer" devices have been patched from being unlocked, as I have two of this exact phone model (Moto G Stylus 5g 2022). The devices that I bought in July and August (Moto G Power 2022 and OnePlus Nord N200) have both unlocked when going through the settings (Settings -> About Phone/Device -> Network Unlock).

When was the first time this device was available via Metro? Has it not been 6 months since it has been released? Surely there must be people with this phone unlocked via the 6 month method. If there aren't then this post should be edited to steer away any people interested in a network unlocked device.

Unsure of when it was released/available on Metro, but I remember seeing it in August but it wasn't free with plan. I think it was $10 with port in and $70-90 for new number. I don't think it became free until November/December, which is when a lot of people here jumped on it. We'll have to wait for more confirmation around June.

No way this (Motorola_Moto_G_Stylus_5G_XT2215-4_S1SDS32.56-22-1_CFC.zip) is "official." It's a frankenstien package renamed to appear like official. No way does stock "signed" stock moto firmware include Flash Tools and Drivers in the zip. Besides that, according to the naming convention used, it's outdated by quite a bit. I won't waste the bandwidth even pulling it down.

Take a look here [lolinet.com], and see for yourself (and there is newer firmware released that even lollinet.com doesn't have yet).

IOW, I don't trust it and I've been flashing Moto's for > a decade. You shouldn't either.

Print out the unlock policy now (in case they made changes later), wait for 180days to request unlock. If the unlock request is denied, go to FCC. Under terms of their policy. It shouldn't be an issue.
