I have two rokinon lenses.... Would this be recommended? I've had both lenses since launch so neither have updates. Camera is a Sony A7III

must have for Samyang/Rokinon owners. you can always check if there are any updates available for your lenses at samyang site before purchasing.

Samyang/Rokinon has a horrible record of fixing its lenses to begin with, even after they extort you to buy an extra piece of hardware for updates. Some of their lenses communicate metadata incorrectly such as focal length as to proper SteadyShot, and easy firmware update requests are totally ignored.

Notably, Sony lenses get updated on-body and don't demand an external dock.

Looks like Tamron behave the same as Sony - just connect the Tamron lens to the camera, connect the camera to your PC and then install the update via a software download from Tamron.

Sony isn't much better. Unlike most of their competitors, you can't update the camera or lens firmware in camera with a memory card. I know the most recent bodies allow that but it's been standard for many many years except for Sony.

Nonsense. That's a problem? Are you too stubborn to use a memory card?

You missed the point. Unless you have one of the bodies released in the last few months you can't use a memory card; you must use a computer. Ridiculous.

Incorrect (of course, I expect no better at an anonymous forum of strangers). Lens firmware updates directly from Sony camera bodies have happened for at least half a decade. And you're also off-topic: the issue is that buying a lens dock for the same is stupid (and you're still lazy/arbitrary for bitching about needing to connect a camera body/lens to a computer instead of from a memory card).

You are right; I was incorrect. But not in the way you believe. You can't update lens firmware for any Sony mirrorless camera via a memory card. The A7 IV released last year finally allowed camera firmware updates via memory card but no lens updates. https://www.sony.com/electronics/...y=firmware
To get back on topic, the Samyang lens station does also require a computer but it's better than the Sony approach because, in addition to firmware updates, it allows for customization like fine tuning AF, and on certain lenses configuring features like using the focus ring for aperture etc. Sony makes great products but they are terrible with their software.
