LOL, these SPX posts always devolve quickly, mostly by haters that know nothing about them, those that are regurgitating outdated information, or had a bad experience with one a while back. I've had one since it was originally released. Early on, there were some bumps in the road for sure, Win on ARM64 was pretty new. There's be a ton of work and improvement done since then. I have no issues whatsoever with my OG SPX. For most people that use Office and surf the web and watch some shows on it, it's perfect. It's my preferred travel device. Tablet form factor and weight but full Windows functionality.

No, you're not limited to only Windows Store apps. Come on, that was never the case.
64 bit emulation has been out for over a year now.
There is an official Win11 build for it.
Lack of 5G is overblown. Midband is just starting to appear in most places and is almost all DSS/NSA which essentially is just LTE-A on a 5G carrier. It's got a SD X24 modem, which is CAT20. It's 4x4 MIMO and 5CA, so up to 20 streams and is spec'ed up to 2 Gbps download speed. Obviously that's not going to happen but it can do several hundres Mbps easily and I do it regularly on AT&T. Some act like if it's not "5G" it may as well be 56K dialup.
VPN woes, Windows built in VPN is fully functional and has all features. Cisco Anyconnect and Palo Alto GlobalProtect have ARM64 versions and are by far the most common clients.
Lastly, yes, there can be driver compatibility if the developer hasn't fixed it.

Ok, rant over, carry on with the SPX hatefest.

I use this as a daily driver - and for an on-the-go pc it is awesome. For the price, you are getting a really high end build quality chassis, beautiful & accurate screen and dead quiet (ARM - so no fans etc...)

It is definitely not for gaming or processor heavy media editing. But I'm using it to edit via photoshop, lightroom, VLC (all ARM64 apps), Audacity (emulated but works awesome), Firefox (ARM64), spotify (ARM64). I haven't really run into many compatibility issues (but I know what I'm using and not trying to install any weird x86...)

Battery life has been great. I even installed a new 1tb 2230 ssd, which was super easy and increased my space and read/write speed.

Cons:
No headphone jack (so stupid in a productivity device)
60hz screen (wish is had the 9's 90hz screen)
No keyboard included (and I still don't love the kickstand on my lap)
No Chrome ARM64 app

Remember that you'll need to spend at least $100 more if you want a keyboard or $200 more if you want keyboard and stylus.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I need an Intel chip if I wanted to use Linux instead.

Funny that nowhere in the item description or the "from the manufacturer" section does it say it comes with Windows. It doesn't even show the device running Windows. It only shows it with a wallpaper.

WAY DOWN in the technical details does it say Windows 10 Home. There is no released ARM version of Windows 11 (there is some beta preview), nor any assurance from MS that they will release one. Not to mention you will be limited on what you can run on it.

This is just too risky of a purchase. Apple is all in on ARM. MS just has their toes in the ARM pool. There is a reason this is discounted $900...
If you had been following this space at all you'd know that Microsoft has been pushing ARM for a long time. This is a second gen Surface device, and there are more ARM Surface devices coming out.

And what's "risky" about purchasing from Amazon?

Not sure how much has changed since the original release. I bought one in 2020 with the SQ1 / 8 GB. Form factor was amazing. Made the Surface Pro 7 feel ancient and unwieldy and cheap. This felt premium and slim. Screen was beautiful. Loved it. But then came the emulation. If software wasn't built for ARM it could be emulated but only if it was 32-bit (why?!). Since many pieces of software were now 64-bit only I was SOL (maybe they fixed it by now). And then I noticed that it would start chugging at the simplest tasks, like web browsing. Became cumbersome to use despite the form factor and build quality. Returned.

Apple got it right with the Apple Silicon transition. Rosetta meant that even if developers didn't build their software for ARM the emulation meant no real world performance decrease was felt (some programs even saw a performance increase IIRC). I bought an M1 Mac and never regretted it. Microsoft had the opportunity with this device many years before M1 even existed, but they fumbled it. Maybe they fixed some things since, but it's a little too late, and from what I can gather on Windows 11 availability they continue to fumble it.

I remember back then people bought the surface rt thinking it was the same as the pro models and were confused as s to why they couldnt install their own apps on it... That was a mess

Yes.

I only need Excel and word to work.
I'm not gaming or anything fancy that needs a i7 chip.

For the price it's ok

Microsoft is poor at understanding its own consumers needs. Combine that with a inability to invest in products future, makes for tons of false starts. Emulation should be better, but maybe they just didn't feel they had the horsepower to run 64 bit software. Coding is not fully optimized in these devices and it is hard to see if they are working hard to improve it. The fact that it is famous for being slow web-browsing doesn't help. I just think they are too accustomed to being a requirement business wise, versus trying to win over consumers.

Now a nice efficient x86 device would be interesting, but Intel let them down. SO now they either really improve their software(which they tend not to be great at) or they need to find decent hardware to make x86 devices. I don't hate the Surface Pro X but it does seem like a riskier bet then say a Ipad Pro or Samsung Tablet. Still maybe at this price it is worth giving it a try as long as you know what you are getting into and are willing to work through the issues.

FYI. Don't mess up and get one of these not paying attention to the fact that this has an ARM processor. We bought one for one of our new employees not even paying attention to the processor. A lot of your apps will not install unless it supports ARM which many do not.

"Wi-Fi models of Surface Pro X come with Windows 11 Pro on ARM. LTE models of Surface Pro X come with Windows 10 Pro on ARM. Surface Pro X running Windows 10 Pro on ARM does not install 64-bit applications that have not been ported to ARM. At this time, Surface Pro X with Windows 11 Pro on ARM will not install some games and CAD software, and some third-party drivers or anti-virus software."

I saw this the other day and have been very tempted to replace my Surface Pro 3 that just died. I know there are limitations but I don't do much on my computer anymore and my wife sometimes uses a laptop to access a VM for work.

Also I saw some got the SQ1, if that happened I would just return it.
Check out some chromebooks if you don't do much on the computer.

Have one actually. I prefer the full windows experience and use of my home server. Same reason I don't love the iPad
