Remember that you'll need to spend at least $100 more if you want a keyboard or $200 more if you want keyboard and stylus.
A keyboard?! If I wanted to get work done, I'd buy a laptop! Wait...that's what I bought. If I wanted a tablet, I'd get an iPad, which is what I got. And I'd still have saved money while getting better app compatibility, an extra device, and faster hardware.

Okay...someone tell me what these really expensive Surface Tablets are for. I'm missing something.

EDIT: Someone told me. It's not for me.

Useless comment but It's wild how far ahead Apple silicon is when compared to any other ARM based laptop. Comparing this not to the M1 but even the A14 is even quite a bit better.

Grossly obsolete and given the age of this model, avoid unless you've got money to throw away just to try and play with different technologies.

Open box at bestbuy $300~ would be the smarter buy.

And yes, not 100% x64-bit regular PC app and drivers compatible, so don't complain when something doesn't work - there is NO workaround.

At the $500-600 price, the sp7/7+ on sale would be better buys.

I think this is a bit overpriced considering the compromises of Windows on ARM. Microsoft should have sold the series as a loss leader to get people on WoA, as a motivation for developers to start targeting WoA. If they are serious about this anyway. But it doesn't seem they are serious. They continue to sell x86 based Surface devices and this is a nice side adventure with a lot of optimistic thinking (of developers magically interested in developing for WoA customers).

By comparison, Apple is all in on ARM (with no new x86 product launches since late 2020), and they priced their first gen MBA and MacMini competitively compared to Intel models.

Apple got it right with the Apple Silicon transition. Rosetta meant that even if developers didn't build their software for ARM the emulation meant no real world performance decrease was felt (some programs even saw a performance increase IIRC). I bought an M1 Mac and never regretted it. Microsoft had the opportunity with this device many years before M1 even existed, but they fumbled it. Maybe they fixed some things since, but it's a little too late, and from what I can gather on Windows 11 availability they continue to fumble it.
It isn't as simple as implanting the translation layer. Apple was prepping for the transition for a long time. They got rid of OpenGL to push full Metal in MacOS Mojave (that caused some issues for their iMac late 2013 with NVidia GPU to not have NVidia drivers), so that there is no vendor graphics implementation, and all apps are forced to update to use the native MacOS APIs. They also banned 32bit apps on MacOS Catalina, despite it being painful for many who were using legacy software. They are now reaping the benefits of bold (and correct) decisions.

Microsoft definitely did not put as much thoughts into their system as Apple did.

Apple just has way more control over their ecosystem. They can say "do this" and developers have to follow if they want to be able to sell apps. They also have the advantage of having made multiple transitions in their corporate history--68x to PowerPC to intel x86 to M1 ARM--there's no expectation there that legacy hardware will last forever and they've learned how to do it..

Windows still has people shipping new 32bit software that could run on 15 year old computers. They have enterprise users running in-house software that was written on windows 98 and has just been strung along since then.

Microsoft doesn't control the hardware anywhere except the Surface line. They can't leverage developers by saying "this is what is coming, in X years, all new windows computers will use Y hardware, so start porting your software today"...because Dell can still build x86 systems as long as they want. And MS can't pull the "well we'll stop supporting it in Windows" card because they depend on windows licensing revenue and need to be able to support old hardware.

The most annoying thing about my SPX is not so much that certain software doesn't run (I expected that when I bought it)...it is that certain software doesn't exist in Windows ARM version...but the same exact software is available for Apple M1 ARM (and sometimes even linux ARM). Like...I know they are not identical but come on, clearly your software compiles on ARM!!!

Can someone explain why everyone is talking about SQ 1 issues when the listing on Amazon says SQ 2? Is Amazon lying?

I've a personal Windows laptop with 7cx2 and a work one with 8cx3. Windows on ARM works really smooth these days, unless you want to play games or run a really legacy apps. Be sure to be on the latest Win11 (at least it must be 22H2), in comparison vs older builds I found no issues. Office runs natively, so do the Chromium Edge (I hate Edge), Firefox and many apps (incl. Teams and Zoom). Dev tools (VS code, GitHub, etc) also run natively. Battery life is not worth vs Macbook.
So I don't get why people have so much hate. You don't buy F150 to race on track (unless you are a Florida crackhead on I-4) as well as you should not buy coupe to run a farm or work in construction.
Personally, I'd get yet another Macbook Air on M1 or M2 (and I do hate the Windows both work and leisure), but if you need a Windows machine for office tasks, with long battery life, why not? Even by Windows standards 16Gb is more than good, screen is also nice. Be sure to get some extended warranty, as these Surfaces are not repairable.

In my opinion, the Samsung Dex on the tablet is way better than an Arm SoC on Windows PC (for light working)

Original poster.... Did you realize this is an arm device?...Your gonna hit some annoying limitations in software with this.
Yup, I definitely wouldnt suggest anyone buy this as their primary device. Windows on Arm is a disaster, most apps have issues with the emulation to x86 and will crash, require tweaks to run, or run slower than native x86.

If you treat this like a chromebook, only using web browsing, youtube, cloud apps, youll be fine. But this isnt a replacement to an x86 laptop or desktop, its more of an accessory with how WoA is right now. For $570, id avoid this still.

I like mine.

It isn't perfect--wish I had an SQ2 or SQ3 chip (if this deal were for the SP9 ARM with the SQ3 chip...I'd be sold).

The form factor was a nice upgrade over my SP5. The built in LTE has been great for use as a travel device. I don't use the pen much now that I am done with grad school, but the integrated rechargable pen is a way better setup than the old surface pen. Unfortunately looks like keyboard/pen not included in this deal price.

Battery life and portabiltiy have been great. Enjoy using it for reading long PDF/Word docs for work. Great airplane machine (fold the keyboard away and you don't have to put it away for takeoff and landing, LTE lets you stay connected at the gate before you takeoff and airplane wifi kicks in).

The SQ1 arm support is...mixed. It does 95% of what I want, but there are some apps that just aren't an option because of the quality of the emulation layer. SQ3 would help this a lot. My day to day stuff isn't a problem, but there are a couple of things I'd occasionally like access to that just don't work well. The big 2 are RStudio and Plex. Plex kinda works but is very slow and choppy (haven't tried alternative apps yet). RStudio used to be a total no-go since it only has 64bit releases of current versions, but I haven't tried it since switching to windows 11 which adds a better emulation layer (but not as good as SQ3).
Other things I've mostly tried to adapt to finding ARM native apps--I don't use it for heavy lifting so it is mostly OK. It works with my corporate Citrix setup, so all of my work apps are available.

Also while the LTE modem has been awesome to have (my work pays for the mobile service, but I think I'd pay the $$ even if it came out of my pocket), the switch to 5G is going to quickly deteriorate the service. Between a 5G modem and the much better SQ3 chip, holding out for a newer SP9 ARM might be better.

Happy to answer any compatibility questions best I can.
Thanks for the positive review and feedback.

Wow, I'm just surprised most of the people are on. Here are just so negative. It's like someone has a gun to their head making them buy this. If you don't want it, don't buy it. It's just a slick deal. It's not for everybody. We all know that. Go buy an apple laptop. Pay $2,000

FYI. Don't mess up and get one of these not paying attention to the fact that this has an ARM processor. We bought one for one of our new employees not even paying attention to the processor. A lot of your apps will not install unless it supports ARM which many do not.

"Wi-Fi models of Surface Pro X come with Windows 11 Pro on ARM. LTE models of Surface Pro X come with Windows 10 Pro on ARM. Surface Pro X running Windows 10 Pro on ARM does not install 64-bit applications that have not been ported to ARM. At this time, Surface Pro X with Windows 11 Pro on ARM will not install some games and CAD software, and some third-party drivers or anti-virus software."
This. Even most VPN programs won't function correctly on ARM.

I think it's clear Microsoft has added this device to the long list of "revolutionary" product lines that were unceremoniously abandoned, leaving consumers with obsolete and unsupported devices.

After reading this... SQ1 vs SQ2 doesn't seem to really matter. Ugh. Will wait till the SQ3 devices get to this point.

True but the iPad software is crap.
