Don't buy this printer. The inks dry out quickly and if you don't use OEM inks (which are expensive; try Costco.com) the prints come out mediocre at best. Don't even THINK about printing photos - it'll be much cheaper if you send your prints to CVS or Walgreens.

I'll never buy another inkjet printer again. If I want color I'll get a color laser printer - they may be more expensive but I wouldn't have to deal with clogs or inks drying out.

Didn't Epson get sued for that years back? According to their FAQ, printers made since 2008 will still work even when the cartridges are shot:

However, the fact that they ever played these tricks in the first place is absolutely foul.

This happened on my HP8620 just last week. Lucky I had a backup.

What's a good cheap laser printer then? I still need most of the functions: color, auto document feed scanning, duplex, and scan to email or pdf.

Yea. I got a B/W ML-2010 laser printer 17 years ago on a deal for $40 and 2900 pages and a few reconditioned cartridges later its still going!

Laser color quality is NOWHERE close to inkjet if your printing photos or high quality images.... As for ink drying out it happens, but that's why a lot of manufactures now have the print head in the cartridge so if a certain cartridge drys out just have to replace that ink cartridge. Other manufactures like Canon also have ink cycling in effect so you leave your printer on at all times and it will occasionally cycle the inks to prevent drying.

My oldschool Canon Pixma MG5220 I believe the model was lasted me over 6 years before I finally sold it to someone for $20 cause I wanted to get something newer. Thats after going through countless 3rd party inks and it sometimes sitting for a few months at a time between prints.
Yes, I still have a canon pixma. It was one of the cheaper combo units $40? At the time probably at least as old as yours (maybe older). I bought it to replace a more expensive canon that broke down because I had a pile of bulk ink. I expected this thing to blow up before I could feed it entire bottles of ink, but it has kept right on going. I refill the original canon cartridges. It still prints fantastic. Never had a problem with drying out. This cheapie refused to die.

>I've had Epson printers before also. They are good printers but a pita compared to Canon when it comes to refilling the ink. On Epson you can have a lot of problems with print quality after refilling. Fixing this often required running the head cleaning utility a ton. I also remember issues with just the security on the cartridges. that required buying a chip resetter to fool the security. I don't recommend Epson if you're an ultimate cheapskate<

Nothing. But, I've had similar issues with some past ink jet printers. The manufacturer would probably try the "we set it this way to protect the print heads because someone would try to scan and immediately have it print out a copy" Excuse.

The Epson Ecotank printers are great. They come with a ton of ink in the box and replacement bottles are cheap. I used to get the Pixma printers but the ink cartridges were robbery. As soon as I got an ecotank I was done with cartridge printers.
I have an ET-2500 which is an older model but it printed thousands of black and white pages and the family printed as many full page and 4x6 photos and they come out great.

https://epson.com/ecotank-ink-tank-printers
I have same model. Also have printed literally thousands of pages. The price seemed scary (think we paid around 199) until we read a bunch of reviews about it. Absolutely the best printer my house has ever had.

Printer manufacturers: When ours finally dies, we won't even consider your printer unless it has this kind of design.

Don't buy inkjet. Ever. Money-sink and frustration generator.

If you want photos printed, it's cheaper to take to a store that does digital prints, or even order them online.

If you want a good cheap printer for the occasional document, B&W laser printer is the way to go. Your toner will last seemingly forever and it will print 3-10x faster than inkjet.

If you want to make color prints, you get the same benefit as above with Color Laser, but your initial cost will be a bit more. Laser works fine for color documents, quick pictures, etc, but you won't get professional looking photos from it. However, it is still cheaper to just order prints for photos than buy/use an inkjet, and they will be better quality than inkjet as well.

Have this printer because I got it for free. If you need a cheap printer and have realistic expectations that it will only last a few years it isn't bad. Small footprint. Easy to load paper that doesn't jam. Prints quick enough. Refills aren't terrible. My wife prints about 20 pages a day in her home office without any issue. Scanner works as expected with both Win 10 and OSX. I am an IT admin who has had my hands on hundreds of printers and you could definitely do much worse.

If you go into settings on any printer there is a setting to allow for generic ink!

Why do they still sell inkjets? For most consumers, we don't print enough before the ink dries. This is like a marketing scheme to trick people into buying more ink.
