Mx500 has served me well. But one drive got destroyed during installation as the ports are only held in place by solder to board inside. Applied too much pressure apparently and ports broke off from ssd

Yikes! I have a total of four MX500s. They've been great, but I'll be extra gentle with them now.
8TB sounds good, but those Crucial SSDs have very short life...
Edit: I assumed you meant 2x 4TB Crucial MX500s.
Comparatively, yes, but are you going to write ~550GB per day for the next 5 years? Even if you write ~225GB per day you are still looking at 10 years before you reach the TBW limit, and let's be honest, nvme prices in 10 years would make it hard not to upgrade.

What's a good enclosure for 2.5" SSD? I'm gonna wait for cheaper 4TB or even an 8TB.
Looking to store a VM or two and the whole PortableApps collection in it.

Comparatively, yes, but are you going to write ~550GB per day for the next 5 years? Even if you write ~225GB per day you are still looking at 10 years before you reach the TBW limit, and let's be honest, nvme prices in 10 years would make it hard not to upgrade.

On the subject of the MX500 life, it has a 5 year warranty. That's 2 years longer than other brands (including the 8TB Samsung in the thread).
