Generally for safety reasons b/c the silicon ring will tear away from your ring finger if it gets caught on something vs. a metal ring that'll take your finger along w/ it if it gets caught on something. This is especially true for people that work w/ moving parts/machines like railroad workers, oil rig techs etc.

Comfort, can be easily removed in an emergency, inexpensive. My wife and I both wear silicone wedding rings when traveling or camping. They are low maintenance and easily replaced if lost or damaged.
