In Vietnam, there is Nha Trang and Da Nang, both are resort towns with major brand hotels, as well as lesser known brands. First world amenities at third world prices.

I know this is a very first world problem here, but just came back from Maldives 2 weeks ago. We stayed in an over water villa (at the W), and also had an opportunity to stay at a beach from villa as well. Having tried both, I think this really comes down to whether you want convenience or something scenic. Over water villa is cool and all, but you spend a lot of time walking back and forth to the main island area and beaches. The beach front villa gives you the convenience of walking out your door and right onto the beach. No need to lug around your gear - the beach is right there. Also, food and other amenities are usually on the main island so less walking to those as well.

$500pp/night isn't that bad, especially when it's all inclusive. On these islands, it doesn't take much to rack up a a $2-300 bill on just dinner alone without alcohol. You can't just walk down to Mc Donald's and grab a Big Mac when you're feeling hungry.

The Maldives definitely is one of the bucket list places for most people, and for good reason. The atolls there are spectacular, and the snorkeling and diving are second to none. Most of these resorts will likely not pack everyone in like sardines, so it'll still feel intimate and not crowded even at full capacity (aka: Waikiki as a comparison)

$500/day per person seems crazy high to me. That's probably $1000/day for most people.

There are just SO MANY alternatives that come in closer to half this cost or less.

EDIT: Lots of people have replied already to disagree. So I request that you don't also. Thanks.

Check out el nido in Phillipines. These overpriced spots like Maldives and Bora Bora aren't any better as far as beauty and are much more crowded. The service is exquisite but in places like El Nido you can literally rent private islands for cheap. The island hopping is by far better and the water temp is amazing. You'll get far more for your money out there but the service probably won't be as nice.
oh the service will be mighty nice 👙

Should go there before it disappears under rising sea levels. Likely won't exist in the next 20 years.

I've never been anywhere but Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Arkansas. Never even been on a plane.

They've been saying this for 40+ years now, yet there it still is.

It's 400/day pp if it's 5 nights. Including airfare, which is another day on each side, without looking into deep details it, doesn't seem too bad.

As Dan Pena said... all of the places supposedly at risk from global warming rising sea levels... never mentioned in the investing prospectuses

This is what the resorts in Maldives cost. I got five free nights (normally over$1000/night) at the Conrad last year but still had to pay $600 each for the sea plane to get there from the main land, plus meals which cost between $25-70 each at the least expensive places. The food and service were top notch. I went to Singapore next and the food disappointed me, that's how good the food was at the Conrad Maldives. It's a great once in a lifetime experience.

You dont need a partner. Dont wait. I traveled 5 months solo through Ph, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Some of my best travel experiences were traveling solo. Sure, sometimes it gets boring, but the other times make up for it.
Another vote for going solo. I planned a 5 month trip during my semester off teaching last year. Had to come back for a few weeks in between because Japan and Vietnam were not open to tourists yet, but as a solo female traveler I had no problems getting around and exploring safely, even in India which was dangerous 25 years ago. Friends joined me for a few parts (trekking to Everest Base Camp... Highly recommend adventurealpinetreks, tiger safari in ranthambore India, Maldives... Did the Conrad with my free credit card nights as mentioned above, and Fiji... Highly recommend taveuni which is much less touristy than the other islands) but for the rest of the trip (Thailand, Cambodia, backwaters of Kerala India, El Nido and Cebu Philippines, Bali and Raja Ampat Indonesia, and Singapore) I was on my own and loved the freedom of doing whatever I wanted. Just be aware of your surroundings but Asia and Europe are pretty darn safe for female solo travelers

Hawai does not come close to maldives. If maldives is overpriced Hawaii is a joke.
If you want to experience luxury, step out of US. You get a personal butler in maldives and he makes you your personal request.
