This or the 4070 ti if they were the same price? I am waiting for both to come down to $700. I do about 25% gaming and 75% productivity.

Still too expensive considering AMD drivers are garbage that corrupts windows installations: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FRZOBU9PcCc
I just did a new build with the 7900x and AM5 motherboard. Use EXPO setting to OC my CPU and I get BSOD. Change my setting to get my RAM from 4800MHz to 6000MHz and I also get BSOD. Update to windows 11 and I get constant BSOD. Reverted back to Windows 10 and everything is okay. So yeah, I'm pretty annoyed with AMD. They need to get their sh*t together.

Just curious since I have read people compare it to a 4080, with less VRAM. When does the 20GB of VRAM really benefit this card? Or any card, really? What benefits does it provide that the 4080 kind of trades blows with the 7900XT despite being 8GB short?

New to PC hardware so the gaming benchmark results baffle me when I see the 4080 cost a good bit more than this, have less VRAM, but still goes back and forth with the 7900XT
Amount of VRAM matters only in that if there isn't enough performance suffers. The concern with these limited VRAM cards like the 4070 is that in a few years games will come out that exceed the 12 GB VRAM. At that point the card's performance tanks. Even though the GPU has the power to play the game, there isn't enough RAM. This can be seen in the hogwarts legacy game where at high settings the game exceeds 10 GB and formerly high end cards like the 3080 10 GB get beaten by a 3060 12 GB.

if you are playing at 4k , you would need more vram for future games.

At this price, the 7900 XT is better. It performs 10-15% better than the 4070 Ti and has 20 Gb of VRAM which will greatly increase futureproofing.

The 4070 Ti maybe better at RT, but the gimped 12 Gb 192-bit bus memory hurts it's potential. The trends are clear, the newer games are getting very heavy on VRAM usage and adding RT requires more VRAM and higher bandwidth memory.

Even at 1440p, which you would get this card for, some games such as RE Village, Hogwarts Legacy, Returnal, Plague Requiem, Dead Space Remake are getting really close or even past the 12 Gb VRAM mark. Games for the next 2 years will become even more VRAM hungry.

If you don't have enough VRAM, it causes lots of stuttering and frame drops.

12 GB is fine for now You're talking 4K gaming at that much VRAM not even close to being a problem at 1440p or below

Hogwarts Legacy has shit optimization. Nothing about that game's look is impressive to the point of justifying that VRAM usage.

So a 7900XT/X will fare better in the long run because of almost two-thirds more VRAM than the 4080?

optimization in this sense doesn't matter. The game is what it is. If you want to play it, you need the hardware for it

Was going to pick up a 6950xt for $700 but saw this and decided to go for it.
According to tomshardware, the 6950 xt outperforms this card at 1080p. Virtually identical performance at 1440p ultra. 7900 xt edges (under 10 frames) the 6950 xt at 4k ultra though.

That doesn't seem to line up with the best benchmarks I've seen (Techpowerup, Hardware Unboxed). The RX 7900 XT is showing a 14% lead at 4k against the 6950 XT. You basically pay extra for the raw performance, improved RT (if that matters), lower power consumption, and extended driver support timeframe if you're holding onto it long term.
