Lasers are the workhorse and they do not dry out. Inkjet may be fine if you print regularly. If you print only occasional inkjet is problematic. Either the ink will dry up or the heads eventually clog guaranteed rendering the inkjet useless. Repeated head cleaning necessary to clear clogged heads uses a lot of ink. The choice is yours.

Canon ink cartridges tend to dry out if not used ... Run about $20 each. So you may end up paying a lot per sheet printed if you don't print often.
Unfortunately, this is true of a lot of printers.
Can you print at the public library?

I always had questions about people rejecting inkjet printers and recommending laser. Is the higher price point for laser worth it, since most users are looking for occasional color printing. Laser color printers are quite expensive. Even their cartridges are expensive. Inkjet cartridges, even though they dry out quickly, aftermarket ones can be bought for cheap. I'm confused 😕

I bought this a while back for scanning only since it was cheaper than most stand alone scanners I could find. So far has worked great, the few pages I have printed have turned out fine, scanning is fairly quick and can combine multiple scans into one pdf. Only downside is when first setting it up I could not find a way to set it up without first installing the ink cartridges, big bummer since I knew I would not be using them for a while and they would eventually dry out.

All-In-ONE page at a time to scan. No auto feeder, no good.

I own 3 of them for my home and office. Work great for what I use them for. The printer is cheap. The ink not so much.

If it's ink, it stinks. Go for laserjet instead.

You're right that the initial cost is higher (about $400 for a color laser), but I'd guess it's closer than you think when you consider how often an inkjet needs total replacement vs a laser.

I'm using an HP color laserjet 3600n from 2006! Refilled toner is about $37 apiece and lasts for an average of 4000 pages, though my machine says the toner has actually been lasting 8000 pages.

For photos on photo paper I'd use Walgreens or an online photo service. Lasers are inferior for actual photo work.

so it looks like people are confused by my post. so I'm adding in a header note to help. I see posts of people recommending laser printers over inkjet saying I kjets are terrible and have a lot of problems from ink drying out to clogged jets. so I wanted to add my experience here with inkjet printers, specifically Brother inkjet printers. it's been nothing but reliable and very very inexpensive to keep up and running using 3rd party inks. hope this header note helps add context to my post.

I've had great luck with my brother MFC-J825DW inkjet printer. Been very reliable for the past 11yrs. Ink has been really cheap at $10 for 4 blacks and 2 of each color at a third party store with discount from Google ads. It's been that low until recently But even now I bought ink for $28 for 20 cartridges.
it's never dried out on me, it's never clogged to the point I've had to throw out the printer. it's always plugged in and runs it's own routine cleaning cycle. it's always ready to go and very rarely jams. I can go months without using it and it will print right away if I need.

the only down side is it's more of an office printer so it didn't do the most vibrant and detailed photos. so making iron on images or printing photos aren't great but they are doable for things
that are meant for single use then toss

What does your experience with an unspecified Brother printer have to do with this Canon PIXMA deal?

It was in response to all the posts that are recommending laser printer over inkjets. And the posts saying inkjets are terrible when they actually aren't. I was sharing my experiences with inkjet printers.

I also added the model number in my original post for you.

Color inkjets in general waste ink due to its cleaning cycle, and more and more recently, manufacturers have been making it increasingly anti-consumer. They do things like chips in inkcarts so you can't use thirdparty, inability to print B&W when a color cart is out, forcing you to open a color cart so that will start to dry out, saying a cart is empty when it still has quite a bit of ink, aging out a cart that has been installed for sometime but otherwise unused etc etc. Some brands are worse than others, some models are worse than others. I believe Brother is actually one of the most consumer friendly brand.

Based on your response, you had your Brother from 11 years ago. At that time, it wasn't as bad as it is nowadays but starting to, and you have a more consumer friendly brand. So from your perspective, it doesn't look too bad. I picked up a Brother color laser All-in-one not long ago for $214.99, it's a refurb, but it works perfectly just can't do good photo. So the price of entry isn't that high for color laser either. Toners are cheap if you use ebay or even refill it yourself and they last a long time with 0 waste due to cleaning. My B&W Brother laser I've refilled twice for $10 each I believe.
