According to most reports M2 is 20% faster but it's disk access is 50% slower while the price is 33% more.

To get disk access on par with M1 you need to pay $200 to upgrade to 512gb ($799 or $699)

There's a slow SSD controversy on the M2 base models. The M1 base models have 2 SSDs while the M2 base models have only 1 SSD so there can be data bottlenecks.

M2 mac mini is $500, any reason to go for this one over that?
M2 is 20 percent faster over m1 unless you edit heavy the m1 will do

can you upgrade SSD yourself or is it soldered on? thanks.
Soldered, but on the mini I've heard an external nvme works pretty well to expand storage, look into those.

With how good Apple Silicon is don't really see the point. Mac mini is enough for basic uses. Don't have to worry about random updates breaking something or having to worry about hardware compatibility.

The M1's _single_ 256GB SSD uses 2x128GB chips where the M2's _single_ 256GB SSD uses 1x256GB chip.

No Apple Silicon Mac ships with more than one SSD.

M1 can only support one external monitor natively. Where as M2 can support two.

You can use a DisplayLink dock, which my M1 works flawlessly with three monitors, but my M2 does not. I use these for office work, no gaming or photo editing.
Both M1 and M2 Mac Mini can support two external displays.

Both M1 and M2 MacBook Air/Pro can support one external display.

This is true. I have an M1 Mac Mini and an M1 MacBook Air. The Mini is hooked up to three monitors: one via the built-in HDMI port, one via a USB-C to HDMI adapter, and one via a DisplayLink adapter. The first two outputs are native (Apple supported) solutions, but the DisplayLink is a workaround that requires additional software from Synaptics:

For this price it's a no brainer. It's a great, snappy little computer. It's probably more capable than 90% of users need.

I almost fell for M2 499 education discount deal, thank goodness that I didn't actually pick it up.

Happy with M1

Will it work as a Plex server? I've never owned an Apple product.

I think that fad died a few years ago.
It wasn't a fad.

Quite a while back I was able to build an I7 overclocked hackintosh that was faster than anything Apple would put out, for less than half the price, and it worked flawlessly.

These days, the OS doesn't work (without some serious hacking) with the latest Intel generations, and the performance benefit vs. Mac Mini isn't exactly impressive.

This is an incredible deal. I'll go out on a limb and say there is not a better computer you can buy for $400*. I do not need a new computer, but if I did, I'd be all over this.

*if you already have an external display, keyboard, and mouse.

Apple changed the game with the M1, super fast, low power consumption etc.

When I did build a few Hackintoshes, I realized it really wasn't worth the time/hassle. Things just stop working randomly, have to do weird updates all the time. It's fun for a hobby, but considering a MacBook air is $799 these days, it's not worth my time to screw around with a computer that randomly works.
