According to most reports M2 is 20% faster but it's disk access is 50% slower while the price is 33% more.

To get disk access on par with M1 you need to pay $200 to upgrade to 512gb ($799 or $699)

Recent mac's are not upgradeable in either ram or sdd unfortunately.

There's a slow SSD controversy on the M2 base models. The M1 base models have 2 SSDs while the M2 base models have only 1 SSD so there can be data bottlenecks.

Tons in stock at Puyallup, WA location, none at Tacoma. Choose same day instacart delivery option using the Costco address to see if any are available.

Did Costco ever stock the 512 gb model? Wonder if they'd have any closeout deals on that one.

Yes, call ahead and make sure there's more than 1 in stock. They count the display as store inventory. Unfortunately they can't hold the item for you though.
My store was able to hold one for me

One thing to note, if you go into Costco they have a little kiosk by the Apple device table where you would order the devices.

But that little kiosk says Sold Out for the M1 (I assume because it's checking the online site).

But you need to talk to a store employee to see if the item number 1486314 is in stock (or 1486316 for the 512gb model $599) .

This is an incredible deal. I'll go out on a limb and say there is not a better computer you can buy for $400*. I do not need a new computer, but if I did, I'd be all over this.

*if you already have an external display, keyboard, and mouse.
Well, you can get a pretty good 12th gen i5 windows laptop for $400.

for web browsing, office work, and movies, this is probably all you need. make sure to buy a 27in 1440p monitor to go along with it so that you have a "correct" PPI that apple computers are picky about.

Will it work as a Plex server? I've never owned an Apple product.
I use a 2009 Core 2 Duo Mac Mini as a Plex Server so I assume this would work lol.

Thanks! Picked one up today at Monterey Park, CA Costco. They had 10+ in stock. Could be good for anyone in the LA area.

So people don't want to do hackintoshes anymore?
Hella good deal in terms of $ per performance proportion. I don't expect to get 25% more Machine for the 25% extra $ with an M2.

I echo many others sentiments. Apple silicon is objectively the best way to experience OSX these days. It's one of the few situations where the vertical integration benefitted the user... Apple forced ARM support by changing their whole hardware portfolio wholesale. It doesn't hurt that their translator for x86 apps is quite quick.

I still have a hackintosh haswell rig running High Sierra. It has no issues, but I expect updates to eventually break the setup...and when it breaks... Its near impossible to fix without spending hours on tonymacx86 forums to find Hopefully one other person who fixed your exact problem. All the rig does now is serve as an Imessage and torrent server.

I used to prefer OSX for mundane work tasks where stability was more important than speed. The UI had never turned me on. But I've not had a crash in well over two years in my thinkpad running windows 10 workstation, within any app or the os itself. I installed some cheap ECC memory from ebay recently so I expect even more stability on my xeon (for that one time a year where you get a bit-flip error).
