Is it even smart buying an outlet that's not UL listed?

you didn't need to hurry - it's been bobbing between $12 and $16 for the last six months.

Just say no to any brand that looks like they just threw a bunch of letters at a wall and picked the letters that bounced back the farthest.

Of course not.

But it's got a recessed back and a screw or whatever. So who cares about safety?
Compliance doesn't equal safety, and safety doesn't equal compliance.
Let's do a quick check - apparently you care about compliance, but do you have AFCI breakers installed? If not, you don't care about safety, I should say. Of course, $1000 or so for a house just for hardware and the last slick deal for AFCI stf was more than 5 years ago...

… what?

Some people live in apartments. I don't know anything about breakers or AFCI or whatever.

A surge protector just seems like a bad thing to buy from some Chinese company no one's ever heard of.

So you don't care about safety, only about compliance. That's what I thought from the start.

Are you on the payroll for this company? Your passion is disturbing.

I'm not an electrician. I simply know that a product having a UL listing is better than not having one.

And I am for the abolition of private laws. There is nothing NRTL certification is doing for safety, that's a prime example of red tape which costs each of us a lot and bring nothing in return except for UL CEO 7-digit compensation..

This is a silly axe to grind and my only takeaway is you are weird.

So your way of making a statement about the salary of a CEO is to shill for a potentially dangerous, no-name surge protector on an online forum about shopping?

Touch grass.

No, I am saying that you are the one willingly contributing towards that salary. Because, you know, you are not getting anything from UL if something happens to listed device anyway. Great position to be in, collect money and have no responsibility...

A pessimist is a well-informed optimist. I know a bit about NRTL system, unlike most people who preach UL without having any idea of what they actually are...

Not sure I follow that logic, or that you and I have the same definition of "proper" among other words. Part of the device HAS a recess, you can state that, but you didn't.

The title implies that the entire device is recessed. It also somehow implies that the device is flush to the wall. It can't be both, and like I said before, it is in-fact neither.

Here is the listing title on Amazon:

Nowhere in that title does it claim to be flush or recessed. Probably because Amazon would make them change it if it did.

Nowhere in the description does it even say any form of the word "recess"
In the middle of the second bullet-point paragraph in the description, it does say,

which is a misnomer, but given the person who wrote the description obviously isn't a native English speaker, I'll give them a pass. Either way, "Flush to..." and "Flush Against..." mean completely separate things, and the latter mentioned is arguably improper.

Saying the pictures make up for misleading text, I don't think I can get on board with that either. I can't list a car saying "Mustang For Sale" and then show pictures of a Volkswagen and not expect to get hassled.
Do you know the meaning of the word "pedantic?"

I saw the pic of the item and wasn't the least bit confused. Go find something else to nitpick about.

Good luck explaining that to your insurance company when the house burns down. I mean use your exact "logic", hey brah, it is better to buy non UL listed. Betcha they cut you a check that day.
If my house burns down and the cause is a surge protector I purchased on the most popular e-commerce site in the country, my insurance company can say what they want. There isn't anything in my policy that requires me to check the stampings on a surge protector.

Could this catch fire or is it suitably certified?
Edit: damn I did not read this thread when I posted this. Looks like the thread is already on fire on this very subject. I do value safety certifications so this is a hard pass for me. Just not worth the risk.

I bought a few of these in the past but I keep running into the same problem- I need one that has the prongs on the bottom not the top for an outlet where the top plug is shorted and I don't want to go in and troubleshoot. The video on this one shows the "other" brand as having a low plug, and theirs having a high plug (prongs), where the heck can I get the "other" guys?

If half your outlet doesn't work, there's a good chance it's controlled by a light switch. Do you happen to have one in that room or near the room (say, right next to the entryway into the room) that doesn't seem to do anything? Plug something in the non-working outlet and see if it switches on/off with the light switch.
