Some of them are just people who don't know how to use a ultra short throw projector. One guy said projector sucks but was projecting on a wall and not a screen. Check out the reviews on projector central and projector screen reviews
It will look fine, but the challenge is mounting it perfectly so you don't have to use keystone correction. It's difficult enough siting on a console. You need to find a ceiling mount that has precise adjustability in all three axis. You'll need to flip the ALR screen also since UST ALR screens are designed to reject light from above. Plus you need to run wires down from the ceiling which defeats one of the advantages of a UST.

TL;DR It's doable but requires a lot of work. If your room allows for it go with a short throw (non-ultra) or standard throw.
This hasn't been funny in 10 years. Time to let it die.

OK, so totally dumb question. I currently have a Vankyo v620 in a dark theater room projecting to a standard mesh screen.

How much of a difference will it be from going to a $100 stand throw projector to this $2k short throw with same mesh screen in totally dark room?

I've never seen a short throw in person so apologize

No need to apologize. You learn by asking questions. I started with a cheap used projector and worked my way up. The difference in image quality is literally night and day, but you won't be able to use your current screen. You need at a minimum a tensioned, fixed frame screen for your dark theater room. If the screen is not perfectly flat you will see imperfections in the projected image due to how close the light source is to the screen. The benefit of having a dedicated dark theater room is you won't need a more expensive UST ALR screen. You can get a decent fixed frame Silver Ticket on Amazon for around $200. Just make sure it's not high gain (over 1.0) or you will see hotspots. A sub-1.0 gain gray screen may enhance contrast and black levels.

I've been looking for a projector for a few months. This seems to fit the criteria of cost and specs I've been looking for. Great deal at $1,800 for a projector that came out 1 year ago with features some others don't have.

I may hang this on the ceiling, anyone have experience how short throws look/work on the ceiling compared to floor?
I was going to try to do this with mine but my ceilings are not tall enough. Also keep in mind the floor will reflect light so you will need a dark carpet to absorb.

I ended up taking an ikea besta and making a pull out shelf for my Formovie Theater ust for my 110" screen using this as a reference. I didn't want to give up the 22.5" it needed away from wall all the time. This allows me to use a 15" depth wall mounted tv shelf and when i want to watch i just pull the shelf the projector is on out to 22.5" away from wall. 110" is the minimum size that clears it

Product dimensions for this projector here are: 21 x 12.4 x 6 inches so that will fit in the Besta setup

How do these look with daylight ambient light being in the room? Do all the blacks get washed out?
You need to use a grey screen to help but it will still wash out some. Daylight is by far the hardest for it to deal with. You'll need some light control

How do these work on standard screens? I have a 100" Silver Ticket screen and an Optima 1080 Darbee that requires a real dark room and it's not very easily adjustable, so the picture is never 100% accurate in all corners. Is the quality of an ALR screen that much better than a regular screen with these USTs?
You want an ALR screen. If you aren't using an ALR you will get poor picture quality. If you can find a sample of ALR patches you will see the difference - its night & day. I have an ALR screen for my UST and I can see everything during the day time. When I had a non-ALR screen everything would look washed out during the day time or even if I had lights on during the evening.

Thank you for the very insightful response. Noting now I'll need a new screen per your recommendation. I was able to purchase before the price change. Hoping it's an easy transition to short throw, but hear people get frustrated at times too. If that happens to me, I may throw in the towel early and move to a $1k standard throw and just get the additional wiring done.

Do you think we are getting close to UST Projector + ALR Screen being $2000 or less?
That's the only way I can justify it. I would like it, just not willing to spend more than that.

I would try something like this. https://a.aliexpress.com/_mLT5ph8
$200 for screen and this will make $2000 total

I have this projector (along with others I'm considering) in my cart for the past couple of weeks. Its always gone between $1789 and $1889 every few days, so if you missed out on price, I think it likely comes back in a few days.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but this is cheaper as its a single laser. The new ones are triple lasers.

With UST, I always wonder on ways to keep it fixed on console table to avoid making adjustments each time it is used. Floor shakes, people knock console table, lot of other activities going on that may displace console table or move PJ out of place.

Probably the best path to start. Keep in mind the distance from the wall needed for 100-120" image is generally longer than the depth of most consoles so you will have a 10-12" gap between the wall and the back of the console depending on the throw ratio of this projector. Also, the height of the console is important. I'm using one that is only 13" from floor to top surface. If your console is too high the projected image will be too high and will cause neck strain.

Not trying to dissuade you, this seems to be a slick deal, but make sure you understand what's involved. You can see from the Amazon reviews a lot of people have no idea what they're getting into and are disappointed in the results. UST projectors are great if set up correctly and used in the proper environment.
120 inches takes 12.50 inches from the wall

most console tables are at least 18 inches wide

What is the life of this projector? Is there a maintenance like the bulbs in other projectors?

That's 12.5 inches from the back of the projector. The projector itself is at least 12" deep. There will be a gap between console and wall.
