Expect to wait a really long time to get privacy for these sized trees. I bought 6' tall ones 3 years ago, planted them 4 ft apart as recommended and still not even close to a privacy fence. They are close to 12ft tall now. Probably 2 more years I'm guessing it'll take to get complete privacy. So for these 1-2' ones, I'm guessing it would take 7-10 years probably.

The trees definitely grow height wise quickly, the issue is they are much thinner on top, so you do get privacy 4 ft or lower when they're 10 feet tall, but wide open spaces on everything above 4 ft high. I'm in NY btw so ymmv

if you want a healthy, strong growing tree that wont be semi stunted for the first couple years, buy local. trees grown in california are going to take a while to adjust to growing in the northeast, etc. high mortality rate, etc. price looks good till you factor in all of that.

I planted 20 - 5' arborvitae from costco in 2010 and they make a thick fence now. I lost 2 along the way, but have filled in the gaps. At the time, they were $20 each, now I believe they are $30, and you have to get them quick, because they sell out fast.

I think you're confusing varieties. Green giant is supposed to grow 3-4'/year in ideal conditions. I have a hedge of 350 of them and can attest that they do indeed grow that fast under ideal soil/weather conditions like we have in the Willamette valley of Oregon.

Can one not just go down to walmart and buy these for $6 each?
What Walmart where? I would most definitely do that if it is true.

Anyone have a good suggestion for a privacy tree/plant for low light areas?
Southwest Virginia, backyard is mostly shaded however. Deer not an issue - just would like a low maintenance something that will grow in lower light. Been overwhelmed trying to figure out on own.

We are located in "7a" - average annual extreme 0-5:
Most hollies are satisfactory in low light; the "Nellie R Stevens" variety is particularly good as a privacy hedge. Burford also does well, but I don't think it looks quite as good.

The solution to this is to grow in a zig-zag pattern, one row behind another row. The back row plants fill in the gap in the first row.

Would these grow in a (very large) container?
I hope so. I just planted two in two very large pots. The nursery said it might limit their height to 10ft vs up to 15ft in ground. That's okay because the pot lifts them up at least 3ft.
The seller recommended fill pot with landscaper mix. The nursery where I bought the mix in bulk recommended a tree mix which has pine, compost, and some perlite. I added a little more perlite. Both pots took almost half a yard of mix.

I did this planting second row two years after planting the first. This method works but is risky in heavy snow country. In my case row X gets AM sun, row Y gets PM sun. I lost 1 twenty foot green giant from a heavy wet snow and after a drought summer. It bent over and snapped. Two other 20 foot green giants bent in two but survived after being propped up.

Relative to single row green giants the two row plants grow taller faster but the single central leader in thinner and more vulnerable.

Don't plant these in a small yard or close to your house. They will be huge one day.

What is the distance that the center of the tree should be planted at the edge of your property so it doesn't overlap onto your neighbors

Anyone know how much I would expect these to grow annually at a zone of 8b (Bothell, WA [Western Washington])? I know this question probably gets asked a LOT but rather than spend hours on something I have no experience with, I am hoping someone may have a quick answer on if I should bother buying these at all Smilie

From personal experience, these don't survive in North Texas regardless of what the map says. Yes, bought them at Walmart -- 4 to 6 feet tall for around $40 each a few years ago.
i bought 8 of these from them but from Costco (same price as the one listed here). I'm in Texas too... oh boy. mine are 2-3 ft though.

I see you got the costco patio cover also, how's that been working out for you? I've been thinking about getting it for my uncovered slab for years. How was assembly and all that?
We love it, we have been spending more time on the patio for sure. I got it when they discounted it to $1500 at the end of last season. Assembly was pretty easy, took a while, but I am also the kind of person that enjoys assembling Ikea furniture. It took a couple of friends to finish the part where you put he roof panels on, but the rest I did myself.
