Expect to wait a really long time to get privacy for these sized trees. I bought 6' tall ones 3 years ago, planted them 4 ft apart as recommended and still not even close to a privacy fence. They are close to 12ft tall now. Probably 2 more years I'm guessing it'll take to get complete privacy. So for these 1-2' ones, I'm guessing it would take 7-10 years probably.

The trees definitely grow height wise quickly, the issue is they are much thinner on top, so you do get privacy 4 ft or lower when they're 10 feet tall, but wide open spaces on everything above 4 ft high. I'm in NY btw so ymmv

if you want a healthy, strong growing tree that wont be semi stunted for the first couple years, buy local. trees grown in california are going to take a while to adjust to growing in the northeast, etc. high mortality rate, etc. price looks good till you factor in all of that.

I planted 20 - 5' arborvitae from costco in 2010 and they make a thick fence now. I lost 2 along the way, but have filled in the gaps. At the time, they were $20 each, now I believe they are $30, and you have to get them quick, because they sell out fast.

I see you got the costco patio cover also, how's that been working out for you? I've been thinking about getting it for my uncovered slab for years. How was assembly and all that?
I'll chime in too. I've had the same gazebo since last year. Assembly from start to finish probably takes an entire day if you have 2 - 3 people, 3 people really only needed to put on the roof panels, which is the biggest PITA. Use a screw driver with torque limiter, will greatly reduce assembly time. I wound up installing a ceiling fan and lights in it as well.

As for pricing, I bought mine May-ish for around $1800 (basically same price as now), then got at least 2 price adjustments down to around $1000 by the end of the summer as it was clearanced out. Did the same with a playscape (which they're selling this year too).

This whole thread makes me so happy I haven't done anything related to landscaping for 15 years.

People will buy these, dig a 6 inch wide hole in hard clay, dump them in, never water them, and then return 50% of them dead while complaining about the other 50% not growing at 3 feet a year.

lmao.

My thuja's get about 6" growth a year. Even my green giant arborvitae's are only 6-9" a year. Your mileage may vary depending on the shade level where they are planted.

The trick with arborvitae's is water the crap out of them to make them grow faster!
Or live in PNW. Mine are 30 feet tall.

Putrified eggs? I did that on my bushes. My God what a stench.
Yes, there is a recipe you can make on your own with eggs. It definitely stinks! Did it work for you??

Unsure frankly. I bought a mix at a local farm supply store and spent a day spraying it around. It's tough to tell if it works because:
- you spray it and just wait to see if animals avoid eating the sprayed plants
- it also wears off over time

So, if animals start eating the plants, are they not affected by the stench OR has it washed off?

I echo that these should be bought locally - Home Depot, Lowes, Costco, etc... all have these and it is usually guaranteed for one year. If you get them in the fall they might be as much as 50% off. Spring time is usually 25% off.
I planted several 5-6 foot arborvitaes back in Aug 2011.
A decade later they are about 12-13 feet tall. July 2022
Location is Columbus, Ohio - Full Sun - and gets a good amount of water. See photos.

In for 48, had to split up order as individually reached the limit. Was quoted by landscaper over $5k for same space but with larger starter trees, 4ft or so. Figured if this works I will save several thousand $$. Planting in open field with plenty of sun. Now to make a deer scarecrow to keep them safe.

Water them well the first two years and they will do great

The solution to this is to grow in a zig-zag pattern, one row behind another row. The back row plants fill in the gap in the first row.

True, but you need to have a lot of property for that to work. In NYC area you have small property lines. My green giants are 3 feet from a fence in a row and now 15+ feet tall. Planted them 10 years ago when they were 4' each. If I planted them in a zigzag I would have lost a lot of my backyard,

Doesn't Costco only do price adjustments within 30 days of original purchase?

Doesn't living in the PNW = watering the crap out of anything that is outside?
