There is no pc laptop on earth that can do that with 8gb of memory. You need minimum 32gb and a dedicated GPU with at least 6GB of video memory to even remotely come close to a smooth video play back.
Having said that. If someone wants to add some special effects, do some 3D effects or color grades the 8gb model is gonna start to run out of memory.
The MacBook 8gb is very similar to a PC with 16gb of memory in practice. The 16gb model really is similar to a PC with 32gb of memory. This is davinci resolve specific.
So i disagree with you that 16gb isn't enough on a Mac, it's just 16gb is all you can get for this model and various pieces of software utilize the memory totally different on the M1 system than they do on the PC side of things.
For example here's a specific example.
In davinci resolve, if you want to do any kind of 3D visual effects, your gonna use something called fusion. Just for fusion to even function in any capacity on a PC your system needs 32GB of memory. 16gb on a PC and that part of the software will basically not load. It's basically disabled until your system has enough.
On an M1 mac, you only need 16GB. And it runs very smooth. So macs and pc are not comparable. But people who buy MacBooks also use Apple specific software. There is software that is only supported on macOS, and you can not use them on PC. Whether that's video like Final Cut Pro or various audio recording software that is Apple specific, there is no comparison on the PC side of things.
I totally understand why people buy apple MacBooks if they are using those specific tools because there is no other option.
So comparing a MacBook to a dell laptop is truly extremely ignorant because they can't be compared.
This model would really only come close to something like an Alienware with an rtx 3060 mobile, and Intel 12th gen i5 with 32gb memory and I can guarantee you a laptop like that will cost at least 2000$
Comparing this to a 200$ older HP elitebook or dell latitude is crazy talk. I should know because I got an elitebook for 250$ with a ryzen 7 3700u and I upgraded the memory to 24gb and I will tell you that an m1 MacBook would run rings around this laptop in davinci resolve. This laptop can run it but to render a 10 minute video will take an hour. On my ryzen desktop pc with an RTX GPU I can do the same video in 3 minutes.
I bet you the M1 MacBook can do the same video in about the same time as my desktop. I know this because I've seen a system similar to mine get compared to an M1 MacBook Air.
So please. Don't be comparing basic laptop to a basic MacBook. The MacBook is much more powerful than you think.
This laptop will still be going strong well beyond the next 3 years.

Yeah, people are missing the 16GB and 1TB part. Great deal.

Okay speaking from someone who built a ryzen desktop pc because I was getting into video editing with davinci resolve. I really wanted to go mac because of Final Cut. But I couldn't spend much more than a few hundred dollars so that ruled out going the macbook route.
PC was way cheaper to put together and davinci resolve was free.
Having said that. M1 MacBook Air with 16gb is surprisingly powerful on davinci resolve. The 8gb model has enough memory to do basic video editing even at 4k but once you add more the 8gb isn't enough.
And you have to realize to get a MacBook Air with 16gb and 1tb storage a year ago it was like 1800-2000$
I would say this is a way better deal than the MacBook that's also on SD right now for 2300$ atleast this one has a 1TB ssd compared to the 500gb for 2300$. And I'm not convinced there's a big difference in performance between the M1 and M2. Sure it might be in benchmarks but at the end of the day if your rendering videos who can tell the difference between waiting an extra 20-30 seconds to spend another 1000$.
I mean if your one of those people where coughing up a couple thousand dollars in the blink of an eye is no big deal for you then go for the M2 but in my opinion, if your needing an Apple system for Apple specific software and to be mobile with its stellar battery life. I think this is really good
Gave air to my gf.
I wish I purchased both pro..
2020 MacBook Air gets bright upto 400
MacBook Pro goes upto 500.
If you don't need 1 Tb
Consider getting renewed M1 Pro 13 with 512 GB from Amazon for 1000

"You don't need more than 8gb of ram because of the new M1 architecture!" I've heard that line so much, where are they now? This machine has 16gb of ram.
Simply put -- it's a decent processor, as long as your application works under this new architecture. 16gb ram and 1tb hard drive aren't terrible specs, but not that amazing either. We commonly had 16gb of ram in laptops back in 2013, so don't tell me that this is still the "standard" over a decade later.
This laptop is nearly 3 years old -- practically outdated in tech standards.
Dell frequently has TOUCHSCREEN (you won't see THAT on a mac, checkmate) refurb laptops with 16gb ram, 512gb ssd, USB-C and USB-A and HDMI ports....for $200. I get it, they're older and slower, but for a $1,000 less....if you're using it for messing around online, watching youtoob, and writing a 200 word essay, who cares? Save that money. You'll need it in this recession.
Okay. I'm not an Apple guy, but I do know people in the Apple community who use davinci resolve and I will say, the base model 8gb version M1 can run a 4k 60fps video on the timeline with no video stutters.
