The concern is with pests that hitch a ride on the plants across state lines. California has significant agricultural exports: Grapes — $5.23 billion, Almonds — $5.03 billion, so laws don't allow shipping plants in from out of state.

You know it's funny, people really don't realize how those laws in California have changed products all over the country to be made of safer materials. A lot of manufacturers don't want to put those labels on their products in California, so they reformulate so they don't have to. This actually improves the quality across the country of those products.

Anyway I get the joke. But I really do wonder if people appreciate the reality.

Yes they are toxic to pets, but my animals don't really chew on the leaves. Now I have it outside in my patio because it really need some "bright indirect light" and it was not doing well in the living room...But I got my FLF from Costa Farms on amazon last year in July, it was like 30" tall. Now it is 6ft. I didn't really chip off the leaves on the bottom because I know if I don't like the look they will never grow back. lol.

If you would rather have a mature plant, Costco usually has 7-10' tall FLF for $29 in the summer. These grow fast in direct (DIRECT) sun. Indoors, even with grow lights, growth is very slow. I have 3 large ones and put them outside from May to October. Went from 5' to 9' in that time last summer. Under multiple grow lights in the house they put out maybe one leaf a month.

Despite their reputation they aren't particularly tricky plants, but 99% of people give them way too little light.

I ordered succulents from the last Amazon deal and I am still killing tiny black flies in my house weeks later. Very frustrating and has ended plant orders from Amazon. First and last.

I bought one for my wife and it arrived a few days ago. Very healthy, full plant. I also bought the bigger one from Costco which is a little more sparse.

It's not just Amazon. Pests are common from nursery and other sources. I isolate new plants, watch for any hitchhikers, spray wash vigorously couple times an week, and use neem/soap mix and sometimes other stuff. Shame these cannot come to California.

Breathing Cali air (smog) is known to cause cancer and mental disorders.
That's probably why Cali is setting standards for better gas mileage and pushing for EVs. Hopefully gets traction since we can all agree dirty air sucks.

What's sad is that it's not funny at all. The fact that so many here in this country have this attitude is the very reason so many corporations sell food and other products in this country that are filled with carcinogens but sell the same products in other countries without the carcinogens because those countries have regulations similar to those in California.

I'm not trying to start an argument but hope those who make jokes about corporations being able to sell things that they know cause cancer will think about why that is the case.
That's ridiculous - name one thing any company has reformulated to avoid slapping a prop 65 warning label on their products. Can coffee be 'reformulated' to avoid having acrylamide in it? No, and the levels of that very common substance which naturally occurs in literally thousands of different foods people have eaten for forever is most absolutely not a cancer risk to humans. So when people criticize the law as being stupid and pointless, it's because the reality is the law is stupid and pointless.

I have been buying plants for myself and family for 30 years. Never had this issue with indoor plants. The number of bugs that have invaded my home from that one shipment is insane.

Super toxic to pets, but if you're looking for a somewhat close alternative, I'd recommend an American Rubber Plant:

I mean, we've already named "one thing", but in case you're not interested in looking, here's a nice summary.
