Alright in for one. I've been looking at this on and off for awhile. I don't gig, just pretend in my basement so 5w is plenty. Thanks for posting.

Also, the 15W has the 1W switch as well. The 5W is a good little amp if that's all you need but doesn't have the extra tone knobs and reverb that the 15W has. In hindsight, I'd have gone straight to the 15 Watter if I'd have known how great all of these Stage Right tube amps sound.

This is a very basic amp. If you know you want it for some specific reason, then this is a good price. But most people would be better served by getting monoprice's 15w tube amp. Whenever it might go on sale appropriately.

You missed the point. It's the everything amp at just 25 lbs and $200 when on sale.

5w tube amp for $95?...sign me up! This is a fantastic price for any tube amp. Twenty years ago if you were able to buy a "tube" amp at a similar pricepoint odds were that it would only have a tube preamp section and a solid state power section. This has both and comes with a Celestion. I agree that the 15w has more features (reverb, eq), but a 5w tube combo is ALWAYS helpful in the studio. Unless you're playing out and want the extra features, most people will not need (or use) more volume than 5w of power tube output provides.

Hi. What's better for a beginner? This or the similarly priced fender front man 20W? Thanks
IMO, this. Tube saturation/breakup just hits different than solid state until you get into the Kemper's and such.

I have long missed my 5W Silvertone 1481 with only volume/tone controls which I got around 1968. (It was made for Sears by Danelectro.) The guy living next to me in the dorm was a serious (and eventually professional guitarist) really into Hendrix) who would sometimes borrow it, noting that it had such great tone. I (then) thought it sounded like crap but when he played his early 60s white Strat through it (with no pedals or anything else) I understood what he meant. Currently 1481s are going for $400+ and I am simply not willing to spend that kind of money for nostalgia. Do any of you have an idea as to how this would compare to that amp? Could I recapture some of that vibe for $100? If so, I'm in. Thanks.
It's going to be somewhere in the ballpark. I've played through a couple 1481's and through this amp. They both share similar qualities to a Fender Champ, but the Monoprice is somewhere between a Champ and a GA-5. There's other forums with folks expressing similar opinions. I don't think you could go wrong at this price.

Guys the price difference is $100. You can't add a great 12" midrange guitar speaker, reverb tank, effects loop connections and the 3 band EQ, and the classic 15W circuit for $100 more bucks. The 25lb 15W punched above its weight. On sale about $202 is the slick deals.

Don't buy stuff to try it without research.

This right here is a prime example of someone who thinks that something that works for them should work for everyone.

This amp is great for people who simply don't have room for an amp that's more than twice the size. It's not competing with the 12". When compared to to other amps of a similar size this thing performs very well and at a much lower price point.

I don't let trolls keep me from understanding the money wasted moving up to the amp I want can be avoided. It doesn't mean practice amps are broken. I already said the 15W is for me, it doesn't have to be for anyone else. And there's more to it than the raw specs too, and the most valuable slick deals. WHEN it's on sale again for around $202. World prices are going down soon. Keep watch.

Speak for yourself; not other posters.

And once again; who knows the place and motive of any poster here. Verify everything.

I've not played these older amps of which you speak, but we own this MP 5W and it's a great little tuber, especially for the price it can't be beat. I regret not getting the 15 Watter with EQ and reverb though which is on sale for $200 at times. We recently passed it and I got my son the Monoprice SB12 which is the 50W tuber at around $400 on sale. Had I gotten the 15W initially I'd likely not have needed to drop the 400 on the SB12 but oh well, with the SB12 he'll never need another upgrade as cranked it'll melt your face, lol The 5W, 15W, and 50W all are pure tube amps that have that rich, full, classis tube sound which won't disappoint. The tone has been described by reviewers as somewhere between the Fender and Marshall tube amps so that sweet spot sounds pretty good to me. I highly recommend for anyone who doesn't want to spend more than twice as much on a name brand but get the same great quallity sound.

All depends if you want the extra features like Equalizer and reverb. Think those come with the Frontman but not on the MP 5W. What you are buying with the 5W Stage Right is that awesome warm tube sound. Come to think of it, probabaly the Frontman or the Mustang platform would be better for a beginner since you can model multiple effectsanf find yor sound. This 5W and is great for tone but is pretty basic and you'd need to add pedals to try out different effects.

I wouldn't recommend using a guitar amp for keys. Guitar amps are eq'd for guitars and typically break up into sweet overdriving tones. Keyboards have a wider range of frequencies and sound better with clean amplification. You'd do better buying a powered class D PA speaker. Can you use it? Yes. Will it sound great? No.

If you mean this Fender Front man 20W. This amp sounds better. Note this requires more maintenance as you need to replace the two vacuum tubes when they go bad. It happens randomly like light bulbs, so they can die after a few hours to years later on.

Thanks for the information. IMHO, the white Tolex is not the most attractive but the speckled finish of the old Silvertone wasn't either. I suspect that you are correct that it's hard to go wrong at this price.
