Melatonin usually works but it tends to make me feel groggy the next day, and there's a sort of "kickback" reaction in the following days that often leads to worse sleep. I recently tried 5-HTP, which seems milder and has less of that "kickback". What are folks' thought on one vs the other for the occasional lack of sleepiness?

Both can be a good option for occasional use. What dose of melatonin were you using? Ideal dosing has been shown to be as low as 0.3mg, or 300µg which is 10x less than a lot of common Melatonin supplements.
I prefer 5-HTP, and if you want to go down a rabbit hole on sleep check out:

I just split a 3mg Schiff caplet I got at Costco into half or a third and it's usually more than enough. I think I read somewhere that anything above a certain dosage doesn't have any effect, so it's ok to take "too much". It was on sale when I bought it and I didn't realize that this was a lot at the time.
