I don't think this is a great deal when the iphone 11 can be had for as low as $60 from Metro PCS, that's with 1 month service included and you wait 6 months instead of 12 for unlocking.

I was able to add the phone and $15 plan by going to phone buy page selecting color and clicking check availability. Then before choosing a plan open new tab and BYOP (https://my.boostmobile.com/shop/buy/plans/) with $15 plan and click Choose Plan. Total (before tax) in cart $214.99.

well if companies accept it that is pretty dumb of the companies.
The companies accept trade ins as marketing and p promotional reasons. Most are refurbished and used either for warranty, insurance or sold/contracted to liquidators that probably end up on eBay and other second hand markets. Most companies that accept trade ins also have the ability to unlock devices. Obviously, if Apple accepts a locked iPhone I'm sure they can unlock it. I'm sure companies have an easier time unlocking if they need to than a consumer

There's nothing wrong with a locked phone for trade in purposes, it's not dumb, it's business

My total cost for this phone with CA sales tax is $260.67 + ($41.77 x 12 months) = $761.91
I tried to downgrade my Unlimited plan in the Boost store and online, but I cannot get the $25 plan until my phone is unlocked, and you got to use the iPhone 12 with Boost network for one year to get it unlocked. I am three months in to find out I got nine more months.

Apple.com sells iPhone 12 for $599 + tax.
You don't downgrade. You get rid of the line, either by closing or porting out. Then you buy a new plan on new account. This has been discussed. Don't expect spoonfeeding.

Yes they will set up auto renewal also without authorization. That's another part of their horrible service. It's just shady as a whole. PayPal probably gets a ton of disputes with them. I had to get corporate to get my last refund. It was a mess.
Without authorization? That's just user error you literally agreed to it when you checkout

Is this currently the best deal for someone wanting an iPhone that isn't too old that wants the cheapest unlimited text monthly fee (if I downgrade to $25 a month after the initial $40 month)?
As noted by others, you can't downgrade (or in my case upgrade) to the $25 plan. I'm on the $15 plan, when I click "change" the only option is the $60 plan.

What others have done in your situation is purchase a different Boost plan on a new SIM and just put that in the locked iPhone 12. If you don't mind T-Mobile service, you can get the plan from Target or Best Buy. You will need two Boost accounts: one that has the $40 plan where you will cancel autorenew and delete the credit card and another account to set up your new cheaper plan.

I wonder if this will affect having the device unlocked in 12 months.

This last paragraph in their unlocking policy speaks volumes.

Note Regarding Boost's Unlocking Policies:
Boost may refuse any unlock request that would result in an abuse of these policies, the Terms of Service or is part of an effort to defraud Boost or its customers. These policies are subject to change at Boost's discretion without advance notice.

By canceling your plan then using the phone on a cheaper plan could be considered by Boost as defrauding them.

This also caught my eye.

Account must be active: If your account is in "suspended" status one-year post initial activation, your Prepaid Device will not be eligible for unlocking until it is out of "suspended" status.

If you turn off autopay does your account say suspended after the payment date?

I did a chat 5 or 6 weeks ago. The CSR said they could only see the same options I saw (my current $15 plan or the $60 plan) and that my account did not qualify for the $25 plan, even though I pointed out that the website says it's for new and existing customers. Most months 5GB should be fine, but it's too bad they don't offer slow data after that.

They have reduced the amount of points we could get daily from the app. Videos are now only worth 10 points instead of 50. it is going to be much more challenging to get free wireless service from their app.
