There's nothing wrong with a locked phone for trade in purposes, it's not dumb, it's business
I tried to downgrade my Unlimited plan in the Boost store and online, but I cannot get the $25 plan until my phone is unlocked, and you got to use the iPhone 12 with Boost network for one year to get it unlocked. I am three months in to find out I got nine more months.
Apple.com sells iPhone 12 for $599 + tax.

What others have done in your situation is purchase a different Boost plan on a new SIM and just put that in the locked iPhone 12. If you don't mind T-Mobile service, you can get the plan from Target or Best Buy. You will need two Boost accounts: one that has the $40 plan where you will cancel autorenew and delete the credit card and another account to set up your new cheaper plan.

This last paragraph in their unlocking policy speaks volumes.
Note Regarding Boost's Unlocking Policies:
Boost may refuse any unlock request that would result in an abuse of these policies, the Terms of Service or is part of an effort to defraud Boost or its customers. These policies are subject to change at Boost's discretion without advance notice.
By canceling your plan then using the phone on a cheaper plan could be considered by Boost as defrauding them.
Account must be active: If your account is in "suspended" status one-year post initial activation, your Prepaid Device will not be eligible for unlocking until it is out of "suspended" status.
If you turn off autopay does your account say suspended after the payment date?
