Extra $60-$100 for an i9-12900KS instead of Ryzen 5 5600 sounds like a pretty solid deal to me, considering the cpu benchmarks are 20%+ better on the 12900KS.

But I'm not sure you meant to lump every Intel 12th Gen chip together considering you only put a $40 price range on the whole category.

Also add another 200 for a MB of equivalent quality. Intel motherboards are way more expensive.

It's a fanboy thing. The whole 1080p benchmark numbers has every fanboy's panties in a bunch. Intel 12th and 13th Gen do use a lot of power and become difficult to cool because of it, especially the 13900K. It's an unavoidable fact 13th Gen is on a 10nm process while Zen 4 is on a 5nm process. Despite the power inefficiency, one still has to admit that somehow Intel's architecture is able to squeeze out such performance from such a much inferior node is a testament to engineering. One that may play a vital role in the future if we ever get to a point where node shrinkage slows down. Either way, competition is only a good thing. If Intel didn't get trounced, they'd stop innovating and likewise with AMD.
Hate to break it to you, but "10nm process" / "5nm process" is just marketing and not actual quantitative measurements of anything. The size-related characteristics of the transistors on each platform are actually a lot more similar than you'd think. And if you go into the BIOS and set a power limit on the CPU package, you'll find that Intel is actually extremely competitive in efficiency.

12th gen is end of the line for that socket and platform. I personally would go for 13+ gen if I was going to buy new.
I find it funny that "end of the line" can mean 10 years on a CPU vs 5 years on GPUs. Ask anyone that is still running 9900k, 4770k, 3770k, 2600k or even x58 xeons. I mean sure, they are end of the line, but if you want cutting edge, who isn't going to pay the extra for new RAM, MOBO, and SSD?

The bottom line is that 12th gen is extremely good value for money at these prices. 13th gen isn't 50% better. AM4 is good too, but it's "end of the line" 🤯

I own a 13900KS, so I bought into Intel this round but Im not gonna delude myself into thinking for a second if I cap the power to 150W it's gonna perform anywhere close to a 7950X under the same 150W conditions (forget the 7950X3D). The result would be utter embarrassment.

This is incorrect. 13th gen is EOL for that socket LGA1700 so you're not upgrading beyond a 13th gen unless you get a new motherboard.

I don't think there exists a "gaming cpu" as far as marketing goes but these CPUs paired with a good GPU will play games really well. Simple as that. Just comes down to what your willing to spend and getting something complimentary. You wouldn't pair an RTX 4090 with an Intel i3 for example.

Something like a 13400F (i5) actually performs pretty much identical to a 13600k or 13700k in games.... so if your primary purpose is to game then it makes sense to save some money and pair a mid-budget CPU with a 4090.

You would go up to the i7/i9 if you needed the extra multitasking power

Raptor Lake Refresh later this year for LGA 1700 so i guess would call it 13.5 Gen

It normally takes at least 2 cpu gens for the old socket parts to crater in price... been that way for the loooongest time. Gpu is a whole nuther shit show with the greed.

If you can't m don't have the money to put $200 on a cpu, don't waste your time building. If you're not gaming, you could put an i3 in there, but if you're looking at these chips and the Ryzen your friend ended up getting in assuming he is. It gets too the point where you're better off spending $500 on a PS5 or XBSX thAn $1000 for a PC that probably can't play games as well as either system.
A $1k PC will destroy a PS5/XBSX. A 5600 and a 6800 will perform multiple tiers higher than either of those consoles and you can build a system around them for well under $1k

Maybe. But put both at the 105W mark and I think you'd be surprised at the result.

It looks like lots of PC components will not recover until late 2023 at earliest, so you can expect MUCH lower prices by Black Friday if you can wait that long. I'm deliberately NOT building a new PC. Instead, I'm playing older games for a while, and maybe getting a PS5 which I'd have to do anyway to play some console exclusives. I get a free 4K Blu-Ray player in the process. That's something no PC graphics card gives me.

SSD and RAM markets won't bottom out until maybe late 2023, or early 2024
https://seekingalpha.com/article/...itive-2024
https://www.fudzilla.com/news/pc-...s-billions

CPU prices aren't going up anytime soon, and AMD may add to the pressure soon
https://www.dexerto.com/tech/amd-...n-2095952/

If you can wait, wait for motherboards to come out with Wi-Fi 7 which has game-changing speed, especially if you don't like wired Ethernet. Those motherboards aren't coming out until late 2023 or even 2024.

If you can re-use your old GPU in your new rig and wait till 2024, GPU prices should keep falling and probably the best time to buy will be when Intel launches Battlemage. Even if you don't get an Intel GPU, you'll benefit from their competitive pressure. Right now Nvidia and AMD are milking GPU customers by selling old tech at high prices, with no high-end Intel GPU to force prices lower.

I am still good with my 9900k system and will wait and watch if a crazy deal happens this BF. Looking more into 2024 releases on PC.

I did get a 4090 as I don't see that price dropping any time soon. Free game offer of Redfall is a nice bonus.

Battlemage looks good but will have no effect on the 4090 price imo.

What would be a good gaming B660/B760 micro ATX motherboard for this CPU? Just for gaming. There is an Asus z690 micro ATX motherboard but it is $300.
