The one I own plays very nicely for the price. I recommend it.

Bass requires bass amp.

Guitar can use either amp. But won't sound as "good" on bass amp.

For beginners I would say get the cheapest bass amp or a pedal that outputs to headphones ($50 target for either amp or pedal).

Edit: you can play bass on a guitar amp … before someone tries to argue I don't want to argue. But the chances of damaging the speaker are significant. It won't explode or catch on fire.

For both high-quality home recording and hearing your bass for less than $100 (assuming you have a computer / laptop)… just search for "audio interface" on Amazon or Sweetwater Music or FB. It's a small USB box that lets you hear and record your bass into a program like GarageBand. The Scarlett 2i2 is a very popular interface and I got one in great condition on FB Marketplace a couple years ago for around $70 (and tax free). Need a good cheap Mac to run GarageBand? MacSales.com sells older pro-refurbished MBPs for as low as $129. Hope that helps someone!
I chose to invest in a decent sub and good monitors and use neural dsp guitar amp plug-ins. It works well for me as I only play at home currently and wanted good sound for mixing.

Never any bass deals and now 2 in one day. I'd really like a Ibanez 5 string but yesterday's 66 had me tempted.

Hey bass players, newbie bass question…can one use a guitar amp with a bass or is a bass amp required (that is, can a guitar amp be good enough for playing around and maybe a little home recording?
If you're working with beginner guitar or bass amps, you're going to get better results DI-ing your bass (ie. plugging the bass direct into your interface) than mic'ing an amplifier. Cheap amps will sound cheap, unless you really know what you're doing.

Look for an audio interface with guitar-level line-in (Komplete Audio and Focusrite Saffire line have these, there are lots) and just plug direct into your interface. Grab a free version of an amp simulator like Amplitube for some warmth and don't go crazy with the overdrive unless you're doing a Suicide cover band or something.

This is really a modern and efficient way to go. Any interface plus free plugins works amazing. I suggest a G-track mic which you can use as a bass guitar interface. Or a tc helicon twin.

Introducing recording, metronomes, compressors, fx and a daw early is smart. With a DAW you can slow the tempo of songs to hear learn and practice with.

So for the same $ investment as a bad bass amp, you can get a lot more musically useful gear.

I highly recommend the NeuralDSP amps.. you can typically get them for 50 to 60 bucks during Black Friday and Anniversary sales.

Ehhh. GuitarML is free open source. There's another free open source neural amp modeler too. A lot happened in a year. As well the amp sims are really a secondary sort of sound shaper. Compression, EQ, fuzz, chorus are more defining and primary.

Each model has a different assortment of virtual FX pedlas and gear. Just like everything and it is subjective.. different strokes for different folks.

So, it's highly recommended to just shell out $200 on a used bass combo, but if you have a big metal guitar cabinet, you could make due for a while.
This, Craigslist can be your friend for used gear.

I don't see why you're advocating a beginner spend money on plug-in FX that are sonically not greatly different than what's available for free. In fact they may be worse, because the have to be limited to fit hardware that's quickly obsoleted (arguably already) I mean it's understandable you want to feel like it was a good value for you, but still.

Bought. And for $169 it's sounds awesome. Yea the paint job isn't the best but it gives me an excuse to get creative and perform a custom paint job on it. Also volume and tone knobs are weird but I'll get used to them.
