Have been watching this router as a potential replacement for a converted $39 t-mobile -> ac68u that still seems to still be working well (with a second hardwired mesh) for 50+ devices.

Still can't bring myself to spend that much on a router that was released in July 2020 (basically 3 months shy of 3 years at this point). I feel like 99-130 would be a slick deal.

TP Link routers generally have more limitations than the Asus routers. Before buying any router, I would search Dong Knows Tech. Lots of information about all of the big brands and how to buy a router. If you take the time, you will learn alot and it will help you make an informed decision about what you need in a router. For me, the AI Mesh upgradeability and the ability to customize the router (a little harder to setup) makes Asus the way to go.

Fantastic router and range. I have 2 smaller S versions. Put Merlin on it: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/ but the hardware is great. The U has the same wireless chip as S but the 2.5GB port and it's 3 or 4-core CPU vs dual-core I believe, and also has 512 RAM vs 256 as the S.

I am getting ~ 600-740 Mbit/s download on wireless real world performance throughout the place with 2 AX86S in AirMesh on 5ghz (Ethernet backhaul). ~940 ish download via ethernet (Comcast 1.2 Gbit/s connection). Same on iPhone 13/14. Super stable connection. Netgear CM1100 modem.

Anyone got any opinion on this router vs the TPLINK AXE 7800 at Costco? https://slickdeals.net/f/16537657-tp-link-archer-axe-7800-wifi-6e-router-for-199-99-after-80-00-off-at-costco?v=1&src=SiteSearch

The AXE7800 is 6e and is newer but there's very little information about it out there. The AX86U seems very popular.

Just returned this router. Was hoping the range was going to be improved from my 6 year old TP-Link router, but it was at best the same. 5ghz had frequent disconnects just one story below in my house. The software was great but performance pretty lackluster given the price.

Great router; bought in November.

I get 800mbps about 20 feet away from it from a 1 gig line. I think 20% is about the lowest sort of dropoff I've ever seen.

Hi Nate, do you mean T-Mobile (AC-1900) By ASUS Wireless-AC1900 Dual-Band Gigabit Router only. Have u used 2 of these and created a Mesh or used some other Router. If you don't mind asking can u please let me know how to do it as I want to implement it in my home as well. it's 3 level one
TIA

I have the Zaku version. It's been great. Better coverage for my 2nd floor. Security cameras have a stronger connection as well.

Firmware makes a big difference. Asuswrt-Merlin is the one to go with. Plenty of discussion on which fw is best and most stable on SNBForums:

Our Router Guru JSZ recommends the 86s over this.

Exact opposite here, this router blew away my TP Link wifi 6 router (a more basic wifi 6). Old router kept disconnecting and the range wasn't great. This Asus was a world of difference.

Really depends on Environment. I've used top end routers (GT-AX6000/GT-AX11000) that perform poorly relative to cheaper 4x4 5G radios when it comes to testing multiple channel blocks.

For the longest time, GT-AC2900 (4x4 AC) was competing with AX hardware for me subjectivity.

EMI/Local interference is a factor, hence why the other guy prob didn't see an improvement.

I'm still rocking my AC86 from circa 2018. Rock Solid and very good performer. I know some of the original one's had problems, but Asus is my go to brand.

I believe this is still the way to do it: https://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/

You have to follow the directions so it'll take and stick with other firmware (like AsusWRT-Merlin or normal Asus firmware for AC68u). Once on newer firmware they should be able to mesh like any newer Asus router.
