Still can't bring myself to spend that much on a router that was released in July 2020 (basically 3 months shy of 3 years at this point). I feel like 99-130 would be a slick deal.
I am getting ~ 600-740 Mbit/s download on wireless real world performance throughout the place with 2 AX86S in AirMesh on 5ghz (Ethernet backhaul). ~940 ish download via ethernet (Comcast 1.2 Gbit/s connection). Same on iPhone 13/14. Super stable connection. Netgear CM1100 modem.

You have to follow the directions so it'll take and stick with other firmware (like AsusWRT-Merlin or normal Asus firmware for AC68u). Once on newer firmware they should be able to mesh like any newer Asus router.
On my AX86U, Merlin Status shows 4 cores and 1024 MB of RAM with half used. Also a 2.5G port.

Had similar issues. Guest network dropped all the time. Was using a streaming box on this (for directv stream) and the network dropped all of the time. My cams are on the guest network and always would end up off line. Performance was bad. A huge step down from my ac86. I thought the AX would be an improvement but it was a huge step down. I thought I just had a bad router but it might be more prevalent in the series.
I'd only recommend if you don't need mesh, though. This technically supports AiMesh but there are modern mesh systems like Eero that are better.

I have 4 of these at two different homes (~2000 sq each) running in hardware backhaul mesh and it works very well. No drops. Merlin always a great bonus.
This also has a builtin VPN feature (isolate certain IPs on network to access internet via VPN).
