Have been watching this router as a potential replacement for a converted $39 t-mobile -> ac68u that still seems to still be working well (with a second hardwired mesh) for 50+ devices.

Still can't bring myself to spend that much on a router that was released in July 2020 (basically 3 months shy of 3 years at this point). I feel like 99-130 would be a slick deal.

TP Link routers generally have more limitations than the Asus routers. Before buying any router, I would search Dong Knows Tech. Lots of information about all of the big brands and how to buy a router. If you take the time, you will learn alot and it will help you make an informed decision about what you need in a router. For me, the AI Mesh upgradeability and the ability to customize the router (a little harder to setup) makes Asus the way to go.

Fantastic router and range. I have 2 smaller S versions. Put Merlin on it: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/ but the hardware is great. The U has the same wireless chip as S but the 2.5GB port and it's 3 or 4-core CPU vs dual-core I believe, and also has 512 RAM vs 256 as the S.

I am getting ~ 600-740 Mbit/s download on wireless real world performance throughout the place with 2 AX86S in AirMesh on 5ghz (Ethernet backhaul). ~940 ish download via ethernet (Comcast 1.2 Gbit/s connection). Same on iPhone 13/14. Super stable connection. Netgear CM1100 modem.

I believe this is still the way to do it: https://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/

You have to follow the directions so it'll take and stick with other firmware (like AsusWRT-Merlin or normal Asus firmware for AC68u). Once on newer firmware they should be able to mesh like any newer Asus router.
I also did it. The 86u on stock firmware is primary, T-Mobile router flashed to Merlin is the secondary. Works fine in mesh configuration.

On my AX86U, Merlin Status shows 4 cores and 1024 MB of RAM with half used. Also a 2.5G port.

I'm still rocking my AC86 from circa 2018. Rock Solid and very good performer. I know some of the original one's had problems, but Asus is my go to brand.
I upgraded to a AX86S since it was $150 after coupon not too long ago. I wasn't concerned with the ram or the SOC vs the AX86U because my AC86U was efficient enough with the same setup. I was about to sell my old AC86U but ended up messing with the Aimesh mode. Holy crap, it works great! I don't have a huge house but whatever devices had lower signal now has full signal. Great way to re-use old routers!

The old AC version sometimes goes for $100 new. Working used units can be had for around $50. There are 2 less cores, half the RAM, no wifi 6, slower USB hard-drive NAS speeds, and no 2.5GB WAN/LAN port compared to this AX86U. If you aren't running Wifi 6 devices, using the NAS feature, and don't need the 2.5GB WAN/LAN port then it's good enough. Right now it's $110 but it was $100 last week.

Just returned this router. Was hoping the range was going to be improved from my 6 year old TP-Link router, but it was at best the same. 5ghz had frequent disconnects just one story below in my house. The software was great but performance pretty lackluster given the price.

Had similar issues. Guest network dropped all the time. Was using a streaming box on this (for directv stream) and the network dropped all of the time. My cams are on the guest network and always would end up off line. Performance was bad. A huge step down from my ac86. I thought the AX would be an improvement but it was a huge step down. I thought I just had a bad router but it might be more prevalent in the series.

Very tempting deal, this is one of Asus's better routers. There's a chance the price will drop further now that Wifi 7 is happening, but this is still a great deal.

I'd only recommend if you don't need mesh, though. This technically supports AiMesh but there are modern mesh systems like Eero that are better.

The guest network situation is bad in a lot of Asus router. On my AC86U, the guest network is so bad that I have keep all my chinese IOT products on non-guest infrastructure. I am sure Asus knows it but they could not care or can not fix.

What would happen to the mesh if I join it with my two old TMobile flashed ac1900-ac68u? Will the wifi6 drop to wifi when I'm near the TMobile ones? Or is everything downgraded to regular wifi?

This is far from a good price at $229, not sure how this is hitting front page at that much other than someone paying for the publicity

This is a great router, another positive testimonial.

I have 4 of these at two different homes (~2000 sq each) running in hardware backhaul mesh and it works very well. No drops. Merlin always a great bonus.

This also has a builtin VPN feature (isolate certain IPs on network to access internet via VPN).

Imagine needing to replace the antennas on a $230 router for it to function properly.....

I went thru 2 AX86's last year and returned them and kept my trusty AC86U (runs solid, no issues whatsoever with Wifi 5 even a couple of Wifi 6 devices i own). Mainly the AX86U rebooted on its own several times even after clean firmware upgrade. Could have been my bad luck!. In any case, waiting for Wifi 7 routers to hit mainstream in another 1 to 2 years before upgrading.

I've had this router for almost 2 years now. Best router I've ever had. My 2 story house is 2000 sq ft and gets signal all the way to my big backyard. Highly recommended.
