Have been watching this router as a potential replacement for a converted $39 t-mobile -> ac68u that still seems to still be working well (with a second hardwired mesh) for 50+ devices.

Still can't bring myself to spend that much on a router that was released in July 2020 (basically 3 months shy of 3 years at this point). I feel like 99-130 would be a slick deal.

TP Link routers generally have more limitations than the Asus routers. Before buying any router, I would search Dong Knows Tech. Lots of information about all of the big brands and how to buy a router. If you take the time, you will learn alot and it will help you make an informed decision about what you need in a router. For me, the AI Mesh upgradeability and the ability to customize the router (a little harder to setup) makes Asus the way to go.

Fantastic router and range. I have 2 smaller S versions. Put Merlin on it: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/ but the hardware is great. The U has the same wireless chip as S but the 2.5GB port and it's 3 or 4-core CPU vs dual-core I believe, and also has 512 RAM vs 256 as the S.

I am getting ~ 600-740 Mbit/s download on wireless real world performance throughout the place with 2 AX86S in AirMesh on 5ghz (Ethernet backhaul). ~940 ish download via ethernet (Comcast 1.2 Gbit/s connection). Same on iPhone 13/14. Super stable connection. Netgear CM1100 modem.

Meanwhile, my $50 re-flashed T-Mobile AC68U on Merlin still running like a tank for four years and without needing a reboot in over a year. For the price to performance, this router really spoiled me and made me a big fan of Asus.
I also got my TMobile AC68U/AC1900 4 years ago (for $39.99 shake head ). It's a fantastic router... but the AX86U blows it out of the water. Yes, it's more of the same but the AX86 is much faster, has more features, and it has no issues bring the hub for a 30+ device mesh network.

I love how the Asus routers are extendable in AiMesh. The AC68 is still in use today as the 3rd node in my mesh network (AX68U, AX68S, AC68U) in a 2500 sqft 3 story house. I have coverage in front of the house and even the backyard.

I had that rebooting issue also and it ended up being because I was using dfs channels. If the router detects radar it will change the channel and cause a reboot. Once I disabled dfs channels I get no more reboots.
Yeah, dfs was disabled. Literally on 3 brand new units..firmware upgrade, reset and setup from scratch as my AC86U and it would due a kernel dump, kill wifi and reboot after an hour.

Anyone got any opinion on this router vs the TPLINK AXE 7800 at Costco? https://slickdeals.net/f/16537657-tp-link-archer-axe-7800-wifi-6e-router-for-199-99-after-80-00-off-at-costco?v=1&src=SiteSearch

The AXE7800 is 6e and is newer but there's very little information about it out there. The AX86U seems very popular.
I ran a test between these two routers. The Asus had better signal, more stable and reaching further.

The router is good yet too old. For new buyers, they should take AX86U pro or AX6000 ($260 at Amazon) or even higher model.

Lots of experienced people here so let me ask for a recommendation.

I need a WIFI router (Mesh not needed but OK if it is) that has these important features:

1. WIFI 5 or 6
2. Configurable via App
3. App works when away from WIFI network
4. App allows for addition of devices to a "Whitelist" access control list.
5. Would be nice if connected (but blocked) devices could be added to Whitelist via GUI instead of needing to enter MAC address.

This device will go in a public space where we need to control who has access to WIFI, but we won't necessarily be on site / on WIFI to configure it.

TP-Link Deco comes close except only has a Block list which is the opposite of what we need.

Suggestions greatly appreciated. I've grown tired of ordering devices from Amazon to test only to find shortcomings in the items above.

Thanks.

The pro is the same as the regular just that they dropped one usb 3.0 port and they clocked the cpu 200mhz higher which doesn't make a difference at all, your router isn't loaded at all.

Yeah. I agree.AX86u and pro do not make too much difference. That is why I cancelled the order eve for Ax86u pro for $229 at newegg days ago.I was hoping to get AX6000 for $200 or AX11000 for $250, considering wifi 7 is coming.

I also have had Ethernet back haul dropouts on My AX86U with AX3000 router in AIMesh configurations.

Not sure of The latest Merlin 388.1 is too blame. I tried the new Feb Asus Firmware seem better but still had intermittent Ethernet dropouts.

My Ethernet backhaul is MOCA 2.5 based so I changed the MOCA Filter, MOCA Adapter even the COAX cable out of wall and Cat cable....but still intermittent Ethernet drops.

Interestingly, I changed backhaul to 5Ghz and now the AIMesh seems more stable...still scratching my head where issue is.

Currently running Merlin 386.10 on 2 of the T-mobile AC1900 flashed Asus RT-AC68U with hardwire backhaul. It's fairly stable, but 2 main issues for me. 1) wifi call (ios or android) doesn't work well with this, it seems to have a problem of "handing off" from ap-to-ap, and sometime I couldn't even make call out with wifi calling enabled. 2) it is running extremely low on the NVRAM due to VPN clients and server setup to the point that I no longer could setup up static IP due to the NVRAM.

Would the AX86U be able to resolve these 2 issues?

While in practical terms, it's not a big difference for most users, in technical terms, it is an oversimplification.

It's not simply an overclocked version of the older model.

The Pro model runs on a newer hardware platform, with its own branch of firmware that has additional advanced features that the older model will probably never get, as well as potential implications with regard to the length of future support terms.

For some, albeit not most, it could make a difference, and that shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

That said, in general, coming from an older AC model to the AX86U, I've found that while Asus has piled on more features to its firmware, that has come at the cost of reliability, made worse when bugs affect basic functionality.

The gap that the older branches of firmware gave Asus over competitors has shrunk. Still more features, above average frequency of updates, and no obnoxious subscriptions, but each new update brings different bugs, while some remained unfixed.

I picked this up on the last front-page deal in December for $215. It's been incredibly stable and performed very well for me - currently at 31 days uptime, and the last reboot was due to firmware upgrade. Has better range than my old NETGEAR R7800, so much so that I was able to ditch my repeater since the AX86U reaches even my farthest outdoor cameras - something the R7800 could not do.

Out of the box, I tried Merlin first, but I had some issues with it. Went to stock ASUSWRT and it's run great for me. Not sure what my issue with Merlin was, and it obviously runs great for a lot of people, so I'll likely try it again someday. My use case is pretty simple though, no mesh, and aside from DDNS, port forwarding and VPN, I'm not using any advanced features.

Someone that knows about routers what about this one?

https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-AX570...HS3X7?th=1

The only big difference I see is 1GB (which that is still a lot) other than that are they the same thing overall in length and quality? Thanks in advance.

Amazon warehouse has used one for $151. The price is tempting. Has anyone had experience with the used condition?
